The Protector

This story is a recent story I have finished. There might be spelling and grammar issues.(I didn't use the six races in this story.) Also I tried to put this in small paragraphs, however this site keep squishing the paragraphs together. That's why there are large spaces every so often. (I have no idea why there r white blotches in some parts of the story. I keep fixing them and they keep reappearing.) E.M.

The salty air tickled her nose. Kia watched the waves crash over the rocks. The powerful waves forced it's way through the rocks below. She laughed as a clumsy lamb tripped over it's own feet. A women screamed in the distance, “Raiders!” She left the flock, running for her life. The raiders would kidnap young maidens such as herself. She dove into the hole which she dug for this very occasion. She barely had enough room to turn around. Kia squirmed to get comfortable. However it was impossible to become comfortable with dirt in your panties. She froze as the ground started to shake. She peeked outside scanning the area. A hoof stepped in front of her view. Kia slinked back startled by the big hoof. Loose dirt fell from the ceiling as the rider unmounted. She sneezed, alerting the Raider to her location. A large hand was thrusted into the hole. She shrieked, scrunching herself farther away. The arm was withdrawn; a rough face stared at her. She moved to the back of the hole. She knew they couldn't reach her there. Kia curled up to rest; she wouldn't leave her hole till morning.
The sweet smell of honey bread filled her nostrils. Her stomach growled loud and clear. Her eyes spotted the loaf of honey bread which lay at the end of the hole. She was famished. She grabbed the bread; dragging it slowly into the hole. A large hand grabbed hers; he drug her out of the hole. She twisted his arm backwards; he screamed, releasing her hand. Kia ran from him. The sound of horse's hooves frightened her. She was surprised they were putting in so much effort to capture her. Why? She catapulted herself across the swift stream with her staff. Gracefully flying over the water she landed on the other side. She slid across the mud and into the stream. She raked the ground for leverage on the slippery surface. A large shadow flew over her while she panicked. Strong currents pulled her under; she clawed at the water to stay afloat. She slowly sunk to the bottom; watching the current weave between rocks.
Strong arms rapped around her. She gasped for air as the man pulled her onto the bank. Kia heaved up water over the edge of the stream. She expected the man to seize her and bind her in ropes. However he didn't; she noticed he didn't look the same either. Maybe his son? The man dug around in his saddle bag. “Who are you?” she demanded. He held up some rope, “I escaped from the neighboring tribe.” He began tying his hands together. “Take me to they're city. Tell the guards you've captured me and your turning me in. After the guards take me away, my horse and possessions are yours.” She searched his face for humor but found none. “Why?” He tied a cloth around his neck, “I have my reasons.” He put the cloth in his mouth and jumped onto the horse. Her thoughts traveled to her sheep, “I don't even know you why should I? Besides I have to take care of my sheep.” He pulled the cloth down, “Hi, I'm Doyle the raiders took your sheep. Now since we've met take me to the neighboring tribe.” They stared at each other for a moment. She grabbed the reins; leading the horse around the stream. “What's the horse's name?” “I didn't name him.” Doyle replied. Kia stroked it's mane, “Then I'll call him Ocean.” The man snickered behind her, she glared at him furiously.
It didn't take too long before they reached the city. She stood in awe; the walls looked as if they touched the sky. The iron gates stood firmly locked in the ground as they approached. Two guards stood at the gate just as Doyle said they would. She stopped a few feet away, “I captured him and I wish to turn him in.” The guards came closer to look at Doyle. Her “prisoner” slid off the horse's back. A guard pointed at her, “Come with me to get the reward money.” She looked at the “prisoner”. He shook his head no. She wasn't going to turn down money just because Doyle told her to. She shrugged, “Alright,” she followed the guards into the city. The guards led her through a dungeon. The man spit out the cloth, “There isn't a reward.” she scoffed at him,“Then where are they taking me?” The guards shoved the man into a deep cell. “Wait! I captured him!” she yelled. The guards pushed her into the cell. She fell down into the dark cell. “Exactly why you'd be great entertainment.” chuckled the guard. The guards slammed the door.
She sat up searching the room, “Where are you?” she demanded. “Get off me.” he groaned. She jumped up, “Sorry,” The lighting at the bottom was gloomy. She looked up at the cell bars. “Maybe we can climb out?” The man sat up, “The wall is too smooth and the bars too high up to climb.” She catapulted herself with her staff; she reached out for the bars. Missed, she hit the wall falling backwards onto the floor. “Ow...” She sat up rubbing her elbows. She looked back at the man, “Come help me.” She froze, Doyle and a women were talking. “Well now we're eligible to compete.” he sighed. The women scoffed at him, “She won't last the first battle.” Kia jumped in between them, “Why aren't you guys helping me!” The women lunged at her; she easily pinned Kia to the ground. The women scowled, she jumped up and turned to Doyle. “You were suppose to find a worthy fighter. Not a worthless shepherd girl!” Doyle grinned sheepishly, “Well... she is a fast runner.” Her eyes narrowed, “Lets see how fast you'll run when I rip off your legs.” “Enough!” Their attention was drawn to the darkest side of the prison. Bright blue eyes stared at them.“We'll have to work with what we have.” Kia stared into the corner trying to see the man's face. The women pointed at Kia, “Zale she's not a fighter!” “Do you dislike my decision?” The women backed away to a secluded corner.
Doyle pulled Kia to her feet. “Kia this is Zale.” Zale slowly rose to his feet, “Your training will begin immediately.” Turned her around, “And you've already met Terra.” Terra was laying on a mat with her back facing them, her red braid hung over her shoulder. Kia took her staff from the floor. “Doyle, what am I training for?” The back wall slowly retracted into the ceiling. He clasped his hands together, “Your about to find out.” He started walking out of the cell. Terra gave her a sinister smile before following him. She peered out of the cell. A huge crowd cheered them on as others left their cells. A large clear dome covered the arena. Zale walked into the arena, She stared at him studying his features; dark brown hair, blue eyes, sleek, and short about her height. He looked back at her. “Arn't you coming?” She ran up next to him. They started walking across the arena.“Stay behind the line and observe. Your not ready to battle yet.” They stopped next to Doyle and Terra. The crowd's excitement faded as they're eyes were directed to a podium. A man spun a huge wheel, when the wheel stopped an arrow pointed to words. The man yelled into a megaphone, “Team battle start!” Men around the arena on pedestals yelled it across the stadium for the crowd to hear. Zale turned to her, “This is a four against four battle, stay close to me if you don't want to die.” Three men and a minator were across from them. A loud horn started the match.
The minator charged at them, she jumped out of the way barely missing the horns. She looked around for the others who were busy fighting the men. The minator raked at the ground, ready to charge. She fled from it, triggering it to race after her. She dare not look back, she knew it was coming closer every second. “Help!” she screamed. She stopped at the wall looking for Doyle. However he was currently occupied by the opposite team. The minator was closing in, she held up her staff to defend herself. A blur crashed into the minator seconds before impact. The horn nicked her arm, drawing blood. She watched Doyle hit the minator's weak spot, the minator fell onto him. The horn sounded, they had won the battle. She ran over to Terra and Zale. “Doyle is hurt!” They're walk turned into a run. Zale stopped next to her, Terra continued to Doyle's rescue. “Get back to the cell and clean your wound.” She ran back to the cell with her staff in hand. She waited for Zale, Terra, and Doyle to return. It seemed like it took forever for them to return. “What's taking them so long?” she yawned. She leaned against the wall drearily. I'll just rest my eyes for a moment...
Kia yawned, stretching out her arms. Terra and Doyle remained on their mats asleep. Why is the door still open? She removed the blanket around her. “Where's my staff?” she murmured. Kia tip toed out the door. “Ready for training?” She swerved around; Zale twirled her staff in his hand. “Lets see what you already know. Try to take your stick back.” She lunged at him without hesitation. She grabbed at her staff however he hit her hands away. “Ow!” She yelped. He held the staff behind his back inspecting her stance. “Bend your knees.” She turned as he circled her. “What are you doing?” He pushed her back with the end of the staff. She staggered backwards falling onto her rump. “Give me my staff!” she demanded. Zale held out it out wanted her to take it. She reached out to grab it; he yanked it back out of her reach. “We need to work on your balance.” he informed. He held out his arms, lifting up one foot. “You try it.” Kia spread out her arms, lifting her foot. She started to wobble; she noticed he was holding out her staff. She lunged at the staff; he maneuvered it out of her reach easily. He remained in the same position. Kia crossed her arms, “When will I learn how to actually fight?” Zale lowered his arms, “If you can get your staff back I will teach you basic combat. Until then your stuck on lesson zero.” He twirled her staff again, he was trying to tempt her. She charged at him, he stepped aside letting her hit the wall. Kia continued to pursue the staff; Zale was able to keep it out of her reach easily. Kia knew if she could just grab hold of it she'd be able to rip it from his grasp.
Kia would lunge at it and Zale would keep it away from her. This continued till lunch time. Kia was worn out, she sat down with her back against the wall. “I give up...” she sighed. Zale tossed her staff down at her feet. “We'll start lesson one after lunch.” She jumped up, “Why'd didn't you just give it to me before?” He at her but didn't reply. Terra handed Kia a plate from a basket. Kia sat next to Doyle, “Are you alright after that minator fell on you?” He swallowed before answering, “Yes, how's your arm?” She shrugged, “It hasn't been bothering me.” Terra stared at them scornfully, “Zale, how's sheep girl's training going?” Zale had sat back down in his dark corner of the cell. “She pasted lesson zero.” Terra smiled at Kia, “There's a lesson zero?” Zale stood up, placing his plate in the basket. “Kia are you ready?” She nodded shoveling the rest of the porridge into her mouth. She dumped her plate into the basket.
Kia raced out to catch up to Zale. He waited patiently in the middle of the arena. “Come at me.” She lunged at him immediately. He grabbed the end of her staff, twisting it out of her hands. He pressed the staff around her neck as if he was choking her. (see Picture 1) “Now escape.” She tried to push the staff away however his grip was firm. He press the staff onto her throat slightly harder. “Everytime you fail at escaping your opponent will tighten his hold.” She bent her knees slightly. She sprung upwards hitting Zale in the jaw. He released his grip, she had caught him by surprise. She grabbed the staff, pointing it at him. “I win!” He kicked her legs out from under her. “Not yet you haven't.” She jumped to her feet. “Is this how you trained Terra and Doyle? Randomly attacking each other?” Zale rubbed his aching jaw, “No.” She crossed her arms, “Why are you giving me special treatment?” He stood up, “Fine 20 laps around the arena, no breaks or you start over.” Her mouth dropped, “What did I say?” “Go!” he demanded. She started to jog around the arena. When did the arena get so big? Doyle joined her as she past the cell. “How'd you get stuck with laps? I thought you were doing basic combat.” he asked curiously. She sighed, “I don't know, he turned sour.” He looked over his shoulder at Zale. “I'm surprised you haven't asked about his origin.” She smiled, “I didn't think about it.” Doyle started to whisper, “You didn't hear this from me. People say that he was taken from the mountains. He had skill no one has ever seen in this realm. They had to bind him in three inch thick chains just so he couldn't escape! Also-” Doyle abruptly stopped, Zale stood in front of them blocking the path. “Doyle, get back to the cell.” Doyle turned to leave as quickly as possible. Kia stopped in front of him. “Why did you stop? Now you have to start over.” “What is your origin?” she blurted out. She held her hand over her mouth. He stared at her scornfully, “Start, running.” She started running immediately.
She fell onto her face in front of Zale. She was exhausted, she'd never run for so long before. She had only five laps left. However since she stopped she'd have to start over, again. Zale smirked, “We'll finish training tomorrow morning.” As he walked away she sat up. “Wait! I didn't finish my laps!” Zale turned slightly, “Fine, run the last five laps after dinner.” She smiled, “Thank you.” she walked slowly to the cell. Terra and Doyle had already gone to bed. Kia retrieved her dish as silently as possible. She set her staff next to the basket. Her fork fell back into the basket, hitting the empty plates. Terra rolled over staring at her furiously. Kia retrieved the fork, however the spoon fell into the basket. “That's it!” Terra sprung from her mat. Kia jumped away before she could catch her. She set the plate in her corner while intently watching Terra. Note to self: Never wake Terra when she's sleeping. Terra grabbed Kia's staff from the basket. Kia ran from the cell hoping to out run her. She tripped, she was still very exhausted from the laps. Terra hoisted her up, she rapped the staff around her neck, choking her. Kia struggled to breath, she leaped up hitting Terra in the jaw. She let go screaming. Kia grabbed her staff from the ground. She stood for another attack. Terra rubbed her jaw, her eyes said it all. “I'm gonna kill you.” She lunged at her, reaching for the staff. Kia kept it out of her reach barely. Hey, this is like earlier this morning... Terra tackled her to the ground using her staff to choke her. “Terra stop.” Zale stood next to them. “No!” Zale placed his hand on her shoulder. Terra immediately rolled off screaming at him. Doyle rushed out of the cell, “What happened?” Zale grimaced, “Terra attempted to killed Kia.” Doyle watched Terra writhe on the ground holding her shoulder, “I see you were involved.” “Doyle take her back to bed.”
Zale turned to Kia as she started walking away. “Kia stay here.” She sat on the ground tiredly. After Terra calmed down Doyle carried her to the cell. Zale sat next to her a foot away. “What did you do to her?” Kia asked curiously. Zale sighed, “I cause pain when I touch someone.” She laid on the ground, “How?” He shrugged, “I was born with it.” Kia stared up at the stars, she remembered star watching with her sheep. “Is there anyway to escape this place?” Zale nodded, “There are two ways. If your original teammates die you'll be set free. Or if your team beats all other opponents they'll set the entire team free. Either way you'll be free to leave or to stay in the city.” Kia looked over at him, “What will you do once you are free?” He glanced at her, “I don't know.” She sighed, “Well when I'm free I'm going to work till I have enough money to buy a herd of sheep.” Zale looked away; Kia sat up curious. “Are you alright?” He didn't respond; she crawled over to him. “Zale? Are you alright?” she asked again. He fell over as if sleeping. “Zale!” she screamed. She jumped up running to the cell. Doyle sat next to Terra's sleeping form. “Doyle! Something is wrong with Zale!” Terra stared at her furiously. “When will you learn?!” She sprung off the mat tackling her to the ground. Doyle started to pry Terra off her. “What's going on?” Everyone froze, Zale stood in front of them. “Kia told us you were hurt.” Doyle exclaimed. Zale sat down in the dark side of the room. “I'm fine, I just dozed off.” Terra rolled off of Kia. She crawled back onto her mat. Doyle held out his hand to help Kia up. “Zale doesn't use his mat you can sleep on it.” He pointed to the dark side of the room. She search through the darkness to find the mat. She fell onto her knees groping around. “Why is it so dark over here?” “You've almost reached it.” She looked in the corner to see blue vivid eyes staring back at her. She crawled onto the mat curling up in the blanket. As she closed her eyes she fell asleep.
Kia,” The sound of Doyles voice. “Kia, wake up!” She rolled over wondering what he wanted. “Kia, the next battle has started, come on!” Kia jumped to her feet, grabbed her pole and dashed out to the arena. Terra and Zale were waiting for them. “I knew you'd be trouble!” Terra exclaimed. “Puddle and Hunter, vs Tree and Muscle! Start!” An announcer yelled into a megaphone. “Who's Tree and Muscle?” Doyle pointed at the other team, “They are Tree and Muscle.” The two men stepped across the line. She could tell who was who. Muscle obviously was the muscly man.Doyle grabbed Kia by the arm pulling her across the line. “Wait, so I'm Puddle? Why don't they use real names?” Doyle stood ready for attack, “No I'm Puddle. They give you nicknames on how you were found.” Kia watched Zale and Terra walk to the wall. The horn sounded the beginning of the battle.
Keep your distance from Tree.” shouted Doyle over the noisy crowd. He ran at full speed knocking Tree to the ground. She dashed from Muscle, he followed her easily catching up. If I can just make it to the wall...Kia ran at full speed. She jumped, pushed off, and flew over Muscle easily. Muscle crashed into the wall knocking him out. I can't believe I just did that! Strong arms grabbed her, holding her in a familiar choke hold. She sprung upwards hitting the man in the jaw. She wormed out of his grip running from him. A vine grabbed her foot yanking her off balance. Tree held her upside down as the vine curled around her encasing her in a cocoon of vines. The more she struggled the tighter is became. “Every time you fail escaping your opponent will tighten his grip.” She remembered Zale telling her that. She went limp pretending to faint. Tree threw her across the arena, he started to show off to the crowd thinking he'd won. Kia ran at full speed crashing into him. She rolled off hoping that knocked him out. The horn sounded again, they'd won the battle.
She looked around for Doyle. However he was no where to be found. Kia ran over to Zale and Terra, “What happened to Doyle?” Terra looked at her furiously, her face was red from crying. “You killed him!” Terra lunged at her. Kia rolled on the ground trying to get Terra off her. Zale ripped Terra off her, “Enough, Terra get back to the cell.” Terra screamed at him as she vanished into the cell. Zale looked down at her, “Terra is over reacting, Doyle was taken to the medical center.” She frowned, “Did I cause it?” He shook his head, “No, However you did beat two opponents in less than ten minutes. Good job.” She smirked, “Thanks.” She followed Zale into the cell. Terra laid on Doyle's mat crying. “Why couldn't Kia have died in his place?” Kia sat on her mat ignoring her. The door to the arena slowly closed. Zale carefully took the basket off the hook. He carried two plates to the darkest side of the room. He carefully handed Kia hers before sitting down in his corner. Terra took out her plate, she rummaged through the basket ripping out the fresh cloths. “Terra what are you looking for?” Kia asked. Terra held up a simple brown dress, “This rag is yours,” Terra tossed it to her then pulled out the same dress except in blue. “This rag is mine.” Terra tossed Kia undergarments. “Zale, how many battle till we get to the finals?” Terra asked throwing off her dress. Zale was facing the wall. “We're in the finals, the next battle is the last battle before against the Masters.” Terra pulled the dress over her head. “Kia, why aren't you getting changed?” Kia smiled sheepishly, “I don't want you to watch.” Terra turned to face the wall,“Get dressed.” Kia stripped off her old dress easily she slipped the new one on. She changed her undergarments underneath her dress. “You can look now.” Terra turned, “Oh yeesh.” Kia's dress reached the floor, while her's was knee length. “Zale keep facing the wall for a few more minutes. The dresses are different lengths.” Terra smirked. She stripped off her dress. They switched dresses quickly. “Zale, you can look now.” Kia informed. Terra dug in the basket pulling out pants, shirt, and boxer shorts. She tossed it to Zale. “Zale, your turn to change!” Terra yelled.
Kia poked Zale in the shoulder, “Zale?” Terra shoveled in a mouthful of food. Kia turned to her, “Did Zale doze off?” Terra shook her head, “He's probably talking to Doyle telepathically.” Kia rolled her eyes, “Terra he's not dead.” Terra swallowed her food, “I know idiot! Why do you think I stopped crying?” Kia thought for a second, “How can you communicate telepathically?” Terra shrugged, “Some people are born with it. Others can only receive messages.” Kia sat on her mat finishing her meal. “Terra, can you teach me?” She shook her head, “I don't teach.” Kia set her plate next to the mat. She laid down for a nap.
Kia jolted awake, “What happened? Where am I?” She calmed herself, “What happened to the cell?” She searched the room for a way out. A secret door opened behind her. She slowly walked up the stairs. She could hear swords clashing above her. This is weird... At the top of the stairs she pushed on the door. As the door slowly opened it revealed a battle. Zale and a man were fighting with swords. Either side never seemed to tire as the battle raged on. They spoke however she couldn't understand what they were saying. She came closer trying to listen to them. Zale looked at her, “Kia, run!” The man stabbed Zale fell to his knees, the man held the sword to his throat. “If you kill me you'll unleash a malicious beast who'll stop at nothing for revenge.” Zale pleaded. The man smiled, “Your just tricking me to save your skin!” The man sliced his throat. “Zale!” Kia screamed. The man looked at her with satisfaction. Kia ran to Zale's body, tears streamed down her cheek. “Zale...” The man pulled her off of him. She turned, “How dare you! He was my friend!” The man looked as if he'd seen a ghost. She slowly turned around; Zale stood up however it wasn't him. Sharp pointed teeth replaced his old teeth, his warm blue eyes were black and narrow. It's fingers turned to claws while it slowly grew taller. She ran away hoping it wouldn't follow. It was like a nightmare in a dream. Wait, is this a dream?
Her eyes opened, the picture of Zale's monster was burnt into her mind. She was back in the cell, it appeared to be still night time. Something big slept next to her mat, blue eyes stared at her in the darkness. She sat up abruptly, “Zale, what are you doing?” He sat up, “Are you alright?” She pulled her blanket around her, “Yeah, why wouldn't I be?” she lied. She was still quivering from the nightmare. “Three laps before breakfast for lying to me.” He yawned. He laid back down next to the mat. She flopped onto her pillow. Great, three laps before breakfast... She slowly dozed off into a deep sleep.
Doyle!” Terra shrieked. “Ow, ow, not so hard!” he replied. Kia yawned, blinking her eyes. “Doyle, your alright!” Kia exclaimed. Kia jumped to her feet. Terra was hugging onto Doyle. “I heard you won the battle. Good job!” Doyle wore a cast on his left arm. “Zale, Castillo wanted me to deliver this to you.” Doyle held out an envelope. “So Kia how's training?” “I have to run laps before breakfast.” she groaned. Doyle followed her to the arena. “I'll join you.” They ran slowly side by side. Once they finished a lap she had gained enough courage to ask him a question. “Who's Castillo?” Doyle smiled, “He's the leader of the battles. He decides which team fights which team.” She became very curious, “What does Castillo want with Zale?” “The weather is nice today isn't it?” Doyle avoided the question. She picked up her pace slowly jogging into a run.
She finished the laps in no time, however Doyle kept running. After breakfast she ran out to the arena, Zale waited for her there. “Those laps have become allot easier.” Kia said with a smile. Zale grimaced, “Then you can do seven more.” Her mouth dropped, “What! But this is boring!” Zale slightly smiled, “How about a challenge then? If you can finish three laps before I can we'll move on. However every time you lose you have to run five laps.” She thought for a second, Hmm, it's only five laps... “Alright, I agree with those terms.” She walked to the edge of the wall, she drug her foot in a straight line. The line marked the start and finish line. “Doyle, can you be the referee?” Doyle gave her a thumbs up as he leaned against the wall. “On your mark,” She turned to see Zale standing next to her, “Holy cow! How did you get here so fast?” she exclaimed. “Get set,” Oh crap I'm so going to lose... “Go!” They both darted from the starting line.
Zale fastened his pace, he was ahead of her. When she blinked he was gone; a blur past her at tremendous speed. As it past the third time she was lifted into the air by a gust of wind that followed. Zale stood at the finish line waiting for her. She fell to the ground with a thud, she stopped at the starting line, “That was unreal! How in the world did you run that fast?” Zale's eyes narrowed, “I believe you have five laps to run.” Doyle covered his mouth hiding a huge grin.
Terra sat outside of the cell watching Kia jog around the arena. She knew something happened since Doyle had a stupid grin on his face. “Kia, what happened?” Terra asked as she jogged by. “Can't stop.” Kia groaned. Terra poked Doyle's leg, he looked at her with a huge grin. “What did I miss?” “Kia is attempting to beat Zale in a race. Every time she loses she has to run five laps. If she beats him they'll move on to basic combat.” Doyle chuckled. Terra smirked, “I didn't think she was that stupid to challenge him.” Doyle sat down next to her, “She didn't challenge him, he challenged her.” Terra's eyes narrowed, Why are you training her like this Zale? Why are you training her so hard...
Kia flopped onto the ground. “Ow...” she groaned. Zale bent down next to her, “Ready for the next race?” She sat up, “Let me catch my breath.” Zale stood by the starting line waiting for her. She marched to the starting line. Terra and Doyle stood a little ways away from the wall. I know I can beat him... “On your mark,” I just need to keep going... “Get set,” and not think about how exhausted I am! “Go!” They dashed from the starting line. Kia was barely keeping up with Zale. Once they finished the second lap Zale began to take the lead. Her mouth dropped, He was going easy on me! How dare you! She rammed him into the wall, a sharp pain shot through her body.
Zale held her as they slid across the ground. Terra and Doyle rushed over to them. “Zale, what happened?” Terra exclaimed. Zale stood up, “Both of you get back to the cell.” Kia cringed at the tone of his voice. Zale grabbed Kia by the wrist. She screamed as agonizing pain entered throughout her body. Zale released her wrist. “Ramming someone at that speed could kill you. Your lucky I shielded you,” He pointed at the long trench she was sitting in. “Thirty-seven laps before lunch, go.” She stood up wobbly, she slowly walked around the arena. “Terra was right your not a fighter. Real fighters don't cheat.” he said as she walked by. Zale stormed off into the cell. She saw Doyle and Terra peeking out at her.
Terra jumped onto their mats pretending to have been there awhile. Zale sat in his dark corner. “Why are you training her like this?” Terra blurted. His eyes flashed, “She's being trained exactly as hard as I was. She can handle it.” She crossed her arms, “You expect too much from her.” “She is almost as powerful as myself. One day she'll surpass all of us combined.” Zale hissed. Doyle choked on his food, coughing constantly. “Is that even possible?” Terra exclaimed. They watched Kia walk slowly in front of the cell. She looked at the ground as she walked by. “Goodnight.” Zale informed while closing his eyes. Kia didn't reply, she kept walking.
Kia's legs ached, she'd been walking for an hour. Almost done... She flopped onto the finish line. She let out a huge sigh. I want to go home to my sheep. I want to sleep under the stars listening to my sheep baa. I want my life back. I should have listened to Doyle... She sat up with a groan. I caused this and I will live with it. I will work hard and never stop trying. I will prove to Zale I am a fighter. She crawled to the cell, her legs hurt so much she couldn't stand. She devoured her dinner, she was famished. Zale was sound asleep in front of her mat. “Terra, why doesn't he sleep on the mat?” Kia asked softly. Terra shrugged, “I don't know, he's done it since we've met.” Kia carefully stepped over Zale. She snuggled into her blanket yawning. I can finally get some sleep...
Kia,” She heard her name. “Kia! Get up!” She jumped to her feet. She was laying on the grass. “Kia, look over here.” She looked around meadow, she spotted Terra at the top of the hill. “Kia, not only is physical training necessary but mental is too.” She stood up, “What? Where are we?” The hill moved under the grass, it carried Terra with it. “We're in your mind, anything is possible in here.” Kia jumped trying to fly. Terra laughed as she fell back down. “Sheep girl, you have to concentrate to make something happen.” Kia ran up the hill; she jumped off the top. She slowly floated down to the ground. Terra grabbed her by the hand. “Like this...” Terra flew in the air carrying Kia with her. “Hey idiot, I'm going to let go.” Terra released her hand. Kia fell to the ground with a thud.
Kia jolted awake, she rolled off the mat. Terra stared at her on her mat. Kia looked around the cell, “Was that real?” Terra scoffed at her, “Of course not it was in your mind.” They looked around the room. “Where's Zale and Doyle?” Asked Kia. Terra stood up, “Aparently a battle is about to start.” Kia jumped to her feet. “Let's go!” Kia raced out to catch up to them. She walked side by side with Zale. Zale glanced at her, “Kia, you won't be fighting this battle.” Her mouth dropped, “Why!” “Because your not ready.” he scolded.“Then I'll prove it to you!” she stepped over the line. The horn sounded the beginning of the battle.
She faced her opponent, he wore a circular mask which covered his face. She raced towards him, knocking him down. The man slid away from her, “My turn!” Dark shadow like arms grabbed her. She screamed as he pried his way into her mind. The arms released her quivering form, she appeared unconscious. “Silly girl, you should have listened to Zale.” mocked the man. The sound of the horns ended the battle.
Zale immediately ran to Kia, he scanned her for injuries. The masked man stared at Zale as he was checking Kia. Doyle and Terra caught up with him. “Zale the doctors have been released to take Kia.” Terra in formed. Zale stepped back letting the experienced doctors work. They had put Kia onto a stretcher. “I would like to go with her.” Zale told one of the doctors. They took Kia out of the arena along with Zale.
Doyle poked Terra's shoulder, “Will Kia be alright?” he asked worriedly. Terra shook her head, “No, her opponent trapped her within her own mind. He's probably still in her mind torturing her in different ways.” Doyle frowned, “Do you think Zale will get revenge if she dies?” Terra smirked, “If he doesn't mentally damage him first.” They both walked back to the cell. Both uncertain if Kia will survive.
Kia and Zale were left in an empty room. The doctors chained Zale's hands to the wall to prevent him from reaching Kia. Kia was laying on a mat. She was held down by floor restraints, she couldn't move if she wanted to. How am I suppose to calm her when she awakes? He looked at the two inch thick chains on his wrists. They think this can hold me? If you cooperate, yes. It'll hold you. Zale looked at the door; he knew someone was behind it. The door slowly opened, a well dressed man entered the room. “Long time no see.” Castillo... Castillo smirked, “What happened to the old you? I liked that one better.” He bent down to look at Kia. “She pretty isn't she?” Zale didn't reply;Castillo put his hand over Kia's forehead, “Don't touch her!” Zale hissed. He snapped the chains off the wall. Castillo put his hands in his pockets immediately. “Did you receive my letter?” Zale's eyes narrowed, “My answer is no.” Castillo frowned, “Come on, why not release it one last time? Kids these days want to see a live monster.” Kia began to writhe on the mat. “Good talk, hope to have more pleasurable chats with you in the future.” Castillo left the room. Zale crawled next to Kia, The boundary has weakened, I can finally enter her mind. Did Castillo weaken it?
Kia ran as fast as she could away from the masked man. Tears blurred her vision as she ran. She ran into someone. However thinking it was the man she kneed him where it hurts. She fled from him only to become trapped inside a wooden box. The masked man appeared in front of her. She screamed at him to go away, tears fell down her cheeks as the man came closer. He struck her with a rod. Blood streamed down her cheek. A dagger's blade pierced through the masked man's chest. The blade was drug upwards through the neck and skull. The masked man evaporated into the air.
Zale stood where the man once stood. She cringed at the sight of him. Zale sat next to her, “Kia, he is gone.” Kia flung herself onto him, crying into his shirt. He rapped his arms around her. She blew her nose into his shirt, “I'm sorry, I should've listened to you.” He sighed, “Kia, you can exit your mind now.” She hugged onto him. “But in real life it'll hurt if I hug you.” He smirked, “That's going to change.” Zale evaporated into the air. Kia smiled, “I wonder how that can change...”
Kia awoke, Zale was staring down at her. “The doctors are going to take you back to the cell.” She sat up, “Ok, what about you?” He grimaced, “I have to go talk to someone. Run fifteen laps tomorrow.” She nodded, “Ok.” The doctors took her out of the room. I wonder who Zale is going to talk to... Once she reached the arena the doctors left. Kia walked back to the cell in the darkness. It's night already? She stealthily crawled into her mat. Doyle's head popped up, “Kia!” he jumped to his feet. “Terra wake up! They're back!” Terra sat up groaning, “I'll say hi in the morning.” she flopped back onto the mat. Doyle rushed over to Kia's mat, “How are you feeling?” She smiled sleepily, “I feel fine.” Doyle noticed Zale wasn't in his corner. “Where's Zale?” Kia shrugged, “He said he had to talk to someone.” Doyle hugged her by surprise, “I'm glad your alright.”
Zale's arms were chained before he was taken to Castillo. “I see you've reconsidered?” Castillo chuckled. Zale brushed the chains off his wrists as if it was string. “I'll only do it if you break the curse.” Zale informed. Castillo smiled devilishly, “Three battles from now a man will ask you to kill him. Do it and I'll take the curse from you.” Zale turned to leave. Castillo called after him,“Zale, taking the curse comes with a price.”
Zale was led back to the arena by guards. I wonder if everyone is asleep... As he got closer he could hear Terra yelling. He peeked inside the cell, “Doyle, go to bed!” Terra whispered angrily. Doyle was tickling Terra all over, “Come on quit it!” Terra hissed. Zale snuck to his corner while they were distracted. Doyle pinned Terra down onto her mat. “Admit it you like it.” Terra smacked him, “Go to bed already!” she whispered furiously. Doyle captured her escaped hand. “I expected all of you to be asleep.” Terra stared at Zale in shock while Doyle crawled to his mat. Zale glanced at Kia, “You both will join Kia in training tomorrow. Goodnight.” Zale laid next to Kia's mat. Terra and Doyle looked at each other in shock, “I thought we'd have a worse punishment.” Terra whispered to Doyle.
An eerie song awoke her, Kia open her eyes. Squinting against the light she saw a plasma looking ball move in different direction. As her eyes adjusted she found Zale playing with the ball of light. As each of his fingers touched it, it made a soft sweet sound. The eerie song enchanted her as she watched him play. He abruptly stopped, the ball made an awful noise. Their eyes met, “What is that?” she asked curiously. He held it up, “Its an orb, playing it helps me sleep.” He squeezed the orb till it popped. Tiny balls of light floated down; she reached out to touch it. The light was warm, it made her feel happy. “Can you teach me how to play?” Zale clapped his hands together, as he slowly opened them. An orb formed in his hands, “Not tonight.” She played with the tiny lights as he played. The song was beautiful, she couldn't wait to learn. The lights flew up from the ground, swirling around in the darkness. As if they were dancing to the music the light swayed back and forth. The lights slowly fell when Zale stopped playing.
Kia looked at him wondering why he stopped. Zale was smiling as the lights fell down into his reach. She gasped, it was the first time she'd seen him smile. She wished he'd smile more often, he'd seem more friendlier. “Kia, not many people can see these lights.” he informed. His smile slowly faded into a smirk, “Shove the lights under your blanket.” Zale popped the ball in her lap. “Goodnight.” He rolled over with his back towards her. Kia yawned as she stuffed the lights under her blanket. Wonder why he wanted me to do this? She carefully crawled under the covers. So warm, thank you Zale... She felt as if she was in a cocoon of warmth. She easily fell asleep since she was no longer cold.
Kia was in a grassy valley, mountains surrounded the fragile area. She was floating on air watching a boy walk along the valley. She floated to the ground, the boy looked familiar. “Zale!” a women ran up to him, she lept into his arms hugging him. “Teacher's been waiting for you.” Kia followed them into a cave. Another dream about Zale? Ugh wonder what this one is about... The women shut the door in her face. Kia walked through the door like a ghostZale stopped, he fell to his knees. An old man lay on the floor next to a girl. They're cloths were stained with blood. The women slowly transformed into a well dressed man. Kia walked around to see what Zale was doing. Tears fell to the ground, which grew into sobs. The well dressed man placed his hand on Zale's shoulder. “Come with me, I can put your skills to good use.” Zale stood up, “Never,” He punched the man straight through the walls. Kia followed Zale as he walked through the rubble. “You think killing my family will change my decision? It won't!” Zale screamed. Zale raised his fist ready to strike the man once more. The man stabbed a sleeping dart into his thigh. Zale fell to the ground unconscious. Raiders jumped out of the trees to bind Zale in chains. “Make sure he can't move.” the man instructed.
Kia awoke in cold sweat. Zale was staring at her blankly. Kia sat up, “How long have you been sitting there.” Zale set breakfast on her lap. “No training today.” Zale sat in his corner. Kia began eating, “Kia, watch this.” Terra whispered to her. Terra dump water onto Doyle. “Doyle wake up ! The cell is flooding!” Doyle shot off his mat, he smacked straight into the door. He looked around confused, “Terra!” he yelled. Terra rolled on the floor laughing at him. Kia couldn't help but laugh. Doyle crossed his arms, “Zale what happened to training today?” Terra threw him his cloths from out of the basket. “It's raining.” Terra informed. Doyle dropped his clean cloths, “Then what do we do all day?” Kia carefully put her empty plate in the basket.
How about we tell each other our origins?” Kia asked sheepishly. Terra leaned against the wall with her arms crossed. “I'm fine with that. I don't know if Zale would be interested though.” Doyle gave her a thumbs up, “Sure, but you go first.” Kia pulled her mat out into the middle, “Okay so where do I begin...” Kia begins telling her origin, “I was four or five at the time when my parents died. An old man took me in. Then when I was ten he gave me my staff. He forced me to care for his sheep. Then couple years later Doyle brings me here. Terra your turn.” Kia dragged her mat back to it's original spot. Terra began telling her origin sheepishly, “Well, I caused trouble in the city, I stole expensive stuff and sold it. They threw me in here once they caught me. Doyle your turn.” Doyle smiled, “I was Terra's partner in crime. I was the one who got us caught. Zale your turn.” Terra shot off the mat tackling Doyle, “You were?!” They both wrestled on the ground while Kia tried to break them apart.
Listen carefully, I'm only going to say this once.” shouted Zale. They crawled back to their mats. Terra, Doyle, and Kia waited patiently for Zale to start. “I fell asleep. Once I woke up I was in the arena.” There was a dead silence. Kia grimaced, He didn't give any details about his past life...
The arena door slowly opened. Water dripped from it as it slid into the ceiling. “Terra, lets get some fresh air.” Doyle and Terra left the cell. “Kia,” Zale called. She scooted to the edge of her mat. “Yes?” Zale looked away, “What do you remember of your parents?” Kia shrugged, “I don't remember what they look like but I remember everyone was nervous around them. Like something bad would happen. ” Zale walked away. “Wait, what do you know about my parents?” Kia demanded. Zale stopped. “If you can beat me at a three lap race I'll tell you all I know about them.” Zale challenged. Kia jumped to her feet, “Ok, I accept your challenge.” He left the cell, Kia followed closely after.
Terra and Doyle stood few feet away from the starting line. “On your mark.” Kia stood read to run. “Get set,” I need to beat him... “Go!” Kia darts from the starting line like a bullet. Zale far behind her; she smiled after the second lap. Wow, I've never been in the lead for so long... I'm actually going to win this! Zale caught up to her, they raced side by side half way through the last lap. Zale abruptly stopped; Kia shot across the finish line. “Yes! I beat you!” she yelled. Doyle and Terra hunched over Zale's body. She dashed over, “Oh crap, what happened?” Zale seemed to be unconscious. Doyle smirked, “He tried to catch up to your speed. He passed out from exhaustion.” Terra laughed, “Zale was right” Zale sat up with a groan, “Kia, we'll move on to combat.” He fell back onto the ground breathing heavily. “Doyle, Terra, twenty diamond push ups each. Kia, five push ups.” Doyle and Terra immediately began the push ups. Kia felt bad for Doyle, he had to do one handed push ups. His arm wasn't fully healed. Kia was confused, “Zale, you were going to tell me about my parents after the race.” Terra froze, “Zale, you've met her parents?” They listened for an answer; Zale didn't reply.
Soon after they finished the push ups Doyle sought out to wake up Zale. Doyle leaned over Zale, “Zale wake up!” He yelled. Zale's hand grabbed Doyle's throat. “Twenty more push ups, go!” Zale demanded. He released Doyle's throat; Doyle coughed as he did push ups. Zale sat up, “Terra, Kia, spar.” Zale leaned against the arena wall. Zale spotted someone above the wall where the crowd sits. Castillo... how long has he been watching?
Terra stood ready for an attack. Kia lunged at her; she threw Kia over her shoulder. She landed with a thud. Terra laughed at her, “Hand to hand combat is my specialty. They're no way you could take me by surprise.” Kia kicked her feet out from under her. “Then that's my goal.” Kia pinned Terra to the ground. Terra wriggled to get free, “You just started and you've already beaten me!” she yelled furiously. Kia rolled off her, “I'm just a fast learner.” Terra grabbed Kia's wrists, “This fight isn't over till I win.” Kia twisted her arms trying to free herself. Terra let go of one wrist, she held the other behind Kia's back. “I win.” Terra chuckled. Kia slid under Terra's legs pulling her with her. Terra flipped onto her back. “I believe I won.” Kia smirked. This fight will never end if neither of us end the battle...
Terra laughed, “I dare you to spar with Zale.” Kia jumped up, “He told us to spar.” “So? Since you were hurt he hasn't been able to say no to you.” Terra informed. She blushed, He hasn't has he... “Zale, can we spar?” She asked Zale sheepishly. His eyes narrowed, “Not right now.” Terra burst out laughing behind her. Kia swerved around, “What's so funny?!” “He didn't say no. I guess he really does like you.” Terra chuckled. Kia tackled her to the ground. “Stop laughing!” she yelled. Doyle ripped Kia off of her. Doyle carried her back to the cell. Terra remained laughing at Kia's reaction. Zale stood over her give her the evil eye. Terra smiled sheepishly, “What? I'm just laughing.” Zale smirked, “Thirty laps.” Terra jumped to her feet. He watched her race around the arena while he walked to the cell.
Doyle let go!” Kia pushed away from him. He smiled at her, “Your very light weight.” She knocked the feet out from under him. “You are to.” she mocked. He fell onto his back, “Ow! That actually hurt.” “Doyle, fifteen laps.” Zale demanded. Doyle immediately raced out to the arena. “Vira and Nathanial Zake.” Zale informed. “What?” Kia asked surprised. “Your parents names, Vira and Nathanial Zake. I will reveal more later tonight.” Zale informed with a smirk. She stood there motionless, Those names sound familiar... Zale stepped in front of her, “Since Terra is doing laps we can spar.” Kia looked down deep in thought. Was everyone so scared because they were bad guys?... Zale knelt down to look up at her, “Kia, are you alright?” He asked. She jumped back, “Yes, what are you doing?”
He stood up, “We're going to spar.” She took her staff from the ground, “No thanks, Terra dared me to ask.” Zale gave her a suspicious smirk, “Fine, if you don't think your strong enough...” Zale started to walk back out to the arena. “Is that a challenge?” she asked. He stopped, “It was, but apparently your too scared to spar with me.” Kia's eyes narrowed, “Fine, I will spar with you!” She tackled him to the ground. He slipped from her grasp easily. Zale slipped on a pair of gloves.
Kia dodged his punches barely. She slid behind him attempting to use a choke hold. He bent down to kicked her feet out from under her. Kia fell to the ground with a thud. Zale twirled her staff above his head, “Ready to try again?” He held out his hand to help her up. She kicked his feet out from under him. “Who says the battle is over?” Kia grabbed hold of her staff ripping it from his grip. She held the staff lightly on his neck as if choking him. “Now the battle is over.” I actually beat him... Zale pushed the staff upwards hitting her in the face. He wriggled out from under her while she was dazed. “Training has ended for today.” He informed, he walked away slightly limping. She froze, Did I hurt him? I didn't think that was possible...
Terra breathed heavily once she returned to the cell. Doyle and Kia were munching on their dinner. “How many laps did you run?” Doyle asked, while shoving food in his mouth. Terra's eyes narrowed, “Over a hundred cause I kept tripping.” She grabbed her plate. Kia tossed her plate into the basket. “Zale, when are you going to tell me more about my parents?” She waited for an answer. Terra barely ate with her utensils. Doyle swallowed a mouth full of food. “Kia, have you noticed Zale hasn't talked at all since I got here?” Kia noticed Zale's plate of food seemed untouched. “He didn't eat his food either.” Kia crawled next to him, “Zale, are you alright?” He hid his face from her, “I'm fine...” She smirked, “Then why are you hiding?” Zale pushed her away, “You'll find out at the end of tomorrow's battle. Now all of you get some rest.”
That night Kia noticed Zale was restless. He played the orb for several hours without rest. Once he put it away he was tossing and turning the rest of the night. What's bugging him? What will happen after the battle?“Kia,” She froze, “Go to sleep.” she whispered. Zale rolled his eyes, “It's almost time to get up anyway.” he informed. She pulled the blanket over her torso, “What's going to happen tomorrow?” she whispered hoping for an answer. He let out a sigh, “Terra and Doyle will die at tomorrows battle. Don't tell them.” Tears filled her eyes, Kia turned over onto her side. Her back facing him. “How can we stop it?” she sniffled. “Even if we did intervene they'd still die.” he whispered gently. Kia sobbed quietly on her mat. Zale put a glove on his hand. “Not everyone will make it to your future. Some people are just passing through to teach you lessons in life.” He placed a hand on her arm. Kia fell asleep while sobbing.
Kia, time to get up!” Kia sat up, Doyle sat next to her mat. She lunged at his, giving him a fierce hug. Not everyone will make it to your future. Some people are just passing through to teach you lessons in life...Zale's words entered her mind replaying over and over. “Kia! Come on Terra and Zale are waiting for us.” He blushed. Kia jumped to her feet rushed out to the arena. Terra turned to see a blur followed by Doyle. Kia jumped at Terra giving her a huge hug. Terra fell over onto her rump. “Kia, get off!” Terra yelled furiously. Kia jumped away, “Sorry...” Terra stood up, “Who's that on the pedestal? I thought only the trumpet guys were allowed up there.” Zale's eyes narrowed, “It's Castillo, he's choosing who in our team will fight.” The crowd roared as guards entered the arena. “Kia, don't fight them.” Zale informed as the guards took them out of the arena. “What about Terra and Doyle?” Kia asked worriedly. The guards took them through a hall. Zale didn't reply.
The guards led them to a small room. A well dressed man looked over the balcony at the arena. “Leave them here.” The guards left the room without question. The man smiled at them, “Don't be shy, come watch the battle.” Kia cautiously walked to the balcony. Zale stood in between her and the man. Kia watched Terra fight her opponent restlessly. Zale looked away; he secretly put on his gloves. “Kia, I believe we haven't met before. I'm Castillo.” Castillo said with a grin. Kia forced a smile to form, “Nice to meet you.” She greeted. Castillo pointed at Terra and Doyle, they stood with their backs against the wall. “Watch closely, here comes the best part.” He spoke cheerfully. Zale covered her eyes immediately; Kia heard a loud shriek suddenly stop. Tears filled her eyes; Zale held her up, preventing her from collapsing. Castillo smiled at them, “Now that's entertainment.” Kia lashed out trying to claw at Castillo. He laughed at them as Zale struggled to keep her away. Zale cornered her in the nearest corner, “Kia,” Zale whispered. Kia still pushed on him to move. “Calm down.” He whispered again. Their eyes met, she froze as if in a trance. She suddenly grew tired and passed out.
Zale caught her before she fell; he carried her over his shoulder. “You used a sleeping spell didn't you?” Castillo grinned. Zale walked towards the exit without a reply. “Aren't you going to get revenge?” Castillo chuckled. Zale grimaced, “Your not worth it.” Zale carried her out of the room. Guards led them back to the arena. As he walked to the cell Kia mumbled in her sleep. “Sheep... baaaa... mooooo... herd...” Tomorrow we'll be assigned to another team... Zale carefully laid her on the mat. The spell should wear off any second now... He took the blankets from Terra's and Doyle's mats. Better take these with me... Zale folded the blankets into tiny squares before stashing them in the heel of his shoe. He quickly hid Terra's knife up his sleeve.
Kia sat up rubbing her forehead, Ow... stupid headache... Zale was sitting on Doyle's mat holding a stuffed animal. “What are you doing?” she asked curiously. He held out the stuffed bear; it had lost an eye along with most of it's stuffing. She took it cautiously, “Was it Doyle's?” Zale nodded, “Found it hidden in his pillow.” Kia hugged the bear, “So we're taking their valuables? Isn't that against the rules?” The bear is still warm... He smirked, “The dead have no need for their possessions. Hide the bear in your inside dress pocket if you want it.” She stuffed the bear into the pocket. He's acting like nothing happened... Is this how he grieves? Kia rapped her blanket around her like a cape. She pulled some of the blanket over her head to form a hood. “Did I hurt you when we spared? I saw you limping.” Kia asked. Zale held out her staff, “What you saw was nothing.” She gave him a suspicious look, I don't think it was nothing... what are you hiding from me? She took her staff. “Kia, promise me you'll stay away from Castillo.” Zale made eye contact. She nodded, “I promise?”He looks so intimidating when he makes eye contact... creepy...
Zale motioned her to follow him. Once they left the cell door closed. Guards put everyone in a line; Zale and Kia were at the end of it. They chained some but not others; they had chained Zale and Kia's hands together. “Why don't they chain everyone?” she whispered. Zale grimaced,“If you wearing a chain with someone it means you just can't take one person that's chained. You have to take the other person too.” Kia looks down the long line of people; men and women took people out of the line. “So they're choosing new teammates?” she asked, she watched a man pass by the line not even looking at the choices. Zale pulled her back into line; Kia pulled her hood down farther to hide her face. “Don't speak to him. He can't know your a girl.” Zale whispered. The man stopped in front of them; he observed them carefully. “Why if it isn't Zale. Do you still have that monster of yours? I can't tell, your energy has decreased frightfully low.” The man leaned forward to see Kia's face. Kia looked down trying to hide. The man smiled at Zale, “I see why.” The man grabbed Kia's arm pulling her out of line.
They stood out of line till the guards noticed them. The guards took them out of the arena only to shove them into a cell. “Welcome back Brandon.” Kia jumped to her feet. A man stared at her from a mat in the corner. “You look too scrawny to be in here.” the man spat. Zale stood up; the man jumped to his feet. “Woah, I guess it's worth it having a scrawny brat.” Zale broke off the chains which kept Kia connected to him. The man who chose them stood up, “I'm Brandon, he is Mike. You both will be sharing a mat.” Brandon pointed at the mat in a dark corner. Mike threw a pillow at Kia, “What's your name?” Kia placed the pillow on their mat. “His name is Kia, he is mute.” Zale informed. Brandon gave him a curious look. Mike jumped up, “If he's a guy then why is he wearing a dress?” Zale's eyes narrowed, “Because the guards gave him the wrong cloths. Goodnight.”
Zale sat on the mat beside her. The mat was large enough for two small people. Kia, we'll have to communicate telepathically for now. She nodded. Am I doing it right? Did you get this message? Zale rolled his eyes,Even if you don't do it correctly I still receive it. Now get some rest. He laid down with his back facing her. Why did you lie to them? Brandon seemed like he knew you... He was my former teammate on the original team I was on. I lied to them to protect you. Brandon does horrible things to women your age... Kia laid down on the mat, she pulled the pillow under her head. What did Brandon mean when he said you had a monster? Also he said something about your energy decreasing... I'm too tired to explain right now... Goodnight... She took out Doyle's bear; silent tears escaped her eyes.
Hey, get up already!” Mike kicked Kia in the back. She sat up sleepily. Zale grabbed Mike's foot twisting it till he fell. “Ow! Brandon he hurt me!” Mike tattled Brandon set Mike's dish on the mat, “Zale, it appears your still a reckless idiot.” Zale left the cell; Kia followed him out to the arena. Now will you answer my questions? Zale stopped; she bumped into him. Brandon was talking about the monster within me. It's hard to contain it once it's unleashed. If I don't let it out it'll eat my energy. However if I release it I have no control over it. Kia held out her staff pretending to hit someone. How long has it been locked up? Zale started walking to the side of the wall. Four or five years. Started to run back to the cell. I'm going back to the cell for breakfast. Zale knelt on the ground digging a hole, Be careful.
Kia rushed into the cell. She looked inside the basket for breakfast. “Oh was this yours?” Mike burped. She swerved around; Mike was holding two empty plates. Why that jerk! That was my breakfast! Brandon stepped in between them, “We have a rule that new people don't eat on the first day.” Bradon smiled devilishly. Kia, come. Kia ignored them; she left to go to Zale. He was sitting on the ground putting on his gloves.“Sit,” he pointed to a spot in front of him. She noticed he had dug a hole. “What are you doing?” she asked noticing a knife in his hand. “Your suppose to be mute.” Zale smirked. Kia sat down in front of him with her arms crossed, What are you doing? “Going to give you a hair cut.” He pulled off her hood pulling her hair out from under the cape. Have you done this before? “Yes,” Kia sighed with relief. Good, I don't want to go bald...
She felt the knife slice through a large amount of hair. He's making it very short... Is he trying to make me look like a boy? “I thought it was better than wearing that hood all day.” Zale replied. Kia jumped up, “You can read my mind! How?” Zale's eyes narrowed, “Sit down and let me finish.” She sat down immediately. You sent me those thoughts idiot. Now after I'm done run 25 laps. Kia felt the knife cut her long strands of hair. She saw Mike watching them from the cell. Do you think he heard me yell at you? Zale peeked over her shoulder, “No, I'm finished.” She jumped up, her head felt a lot lighter. I'm going to start doing my laps...Zale covered the hole filled with her hair. Kia ran around the arena swiftly.
Zale stood up stiffly, he stumbled as he tried to walk. I won't be able to last three days like this... As Zale stood up became lightheaded, Bradon caught him before he could fall. “Your such an idiot!” Brandon hissed. Bradon helped Zale walk back to the cell. Zale smirked, “Just get me to the cell old man.” Kia ran over to them, “What happen-” Brandon looked at Kia in shock. She blushed, Oh crap I blew it. “You little brats will be punished.” Brandon snarled. Brandon dropped Zale at the entrance to the cell. “Get up and walk!” Brandon yelled. Zale sat up, “Drop the tough guy act you know I can't.” Brandon kicked him; Zale slid across the floor. Kia smacked Brandon with her staff. This trash will pay for that! While he was dazed she kicked his feet out from under him. Brandon was furious; he grabbed her staff trying to twist it out of her hands. Kia rammed it into his stomach; while Brandon was on his knees she was going to knock him out. She held her fist up high ready to strike. “Kia stop!” She turned to see Zale standing up in the dark corner. He was using the wall to hold himself up.“Don't do it, murdering is pointless.” Kia walked away listening to Zale.Brandon started to laugh, “Watch your back Kia, he's not the person you think he is.” Kia sat on the mat with Zale. What happened to running laps? Kia jumped up, “I completely forgot.” She rushed out to the arena.
Kia returned to the cell after finishing her laps. She found Zale asleep on the mat with his back facing the room. Brandon was also sleeping, you could tell by his snoring. However Mike was eating their dinner. Kia had to keep from drooling just by looking at the food. Her stomach growled, So, hungry... Mike tossed a piece of ham to her. “Don't tell Brandon I gave it to you.” he whispered. She ripped it in half, she devoured one half of the ham. She poked Zale in the ribs, Zale, Mike gave us some ham. She set the ham in front of Zale's nose. His eyes opened sleepily, “Ham?” A slight smile grew on his face. “Mike gave it to us.” Kia whispered. Zale's smile disappeared, “You can have it.” She crossed her arms, “I don't want it, you already breathed on it.” Zale bit the ham, Fine I'll eat it...
Kia laid down onto the mat. Zale seems to be getting weaker. I wonder how I can help? Mike tossed the empty plates into the basket. Brandon awoke with a jolt, “How many times do I have to tell you! Don't toss the plates when I'm sleeping!” Mike smiled sheepishly, “Sorry Brad.” Brandon fell back onto his pillow, “Everyone go to bed!” Kia stealthily took a cup from the basket. It's been a while since Zale drank anything. Maybe he's thirsty... She quietly filled the cup in the bathroom sink. Kia sat down onto the mat next to Zale's sleeping form. “Zale,” she poked his ribs. “I brought you some water.” she whispered. Zale sat up, I don't like you babying me. She gave him the cup, I'm going to wether you like it or not. Zale formed an orb. Fine, then I'll at least teach you how to play my song. Try forming an orb.
Kia clasped her hands together; as she slowly opened them an orb formed. Didn't think you'll form one on the first try... now copy what I do. Zale played three notes; after Kia played the same notes they moved on to three different notes. This continued for several hours. Long after Zale had gone to bed, Kia remained practicing the song. However once her orb popped she figured she needed some rest.
Everyone get up!” Brandon shrieked. “We have a battle today.” Kia could feel Zale sat up. “Kia, he'll
punish you if you don't get up.” She giggled sleepily, “Fine, I don't want to be yelled at to death.” She sat up yawning. Zale, how are you feeling? Yesterday you could barely walk. I'm fine... Kia walked beside Zale as they entered the arena. The crowd roared in the stands as they walked out. Kia noticed Zale trying to hide his limping. Your limping again, are you sure your alright? He gave her a staff; she didn't even see him bring it out here. Thanks... They stopped next to Mike, waiting for Brandon to give an order. “Zale, Kia, your battle.” Brandon yelled. Kia gave her staff back to Zale. You'll need this more than I do. He glanced at her as they crossed the line. The horn sounded the beginning of the battle.
The crowd roared as the opposite team raced towards them. Kia dodged punches from either side of her. Her opponents ganged up on her. Kia, bring them into the shade. We'll have an advantage... She slid under their legs, she ran to the nearest shade. Zale stepped in front of her, I'm going to blind them for a few moments. When I do, finish this battle. Zale formed a large orb. Kia stood beside him, ready to attack. The two men raced towards them hoping to ram into them. As soon as they entered the shade Zale threw the orb at them. A huge burst of light zipped through the air. However it didn't stop them. The men rammed into them at full speed.
Kia lay on the ground still conscious. Ow, everything hurts... How'd I survive that? She managed to lift her head; Zale was conscious also. However his opponent held him down pulling his hands behind his back. A hand hoisted her up against the wall. “Ow.” she squeaked. Her opponent held him arm up ready to strike her. “Let her go or things will get messy.” Zale informed darkly. The men laughed at him, “She's as good as dead.” Zale's eyes flashed, Then so are you... Kia gasped, I don't think he meant to send that... Kia, as soon as your free. Run...
The man that held her up lifted his hand back ready to strike her. A loud shriek came from where Zale was. No... A large blur smashed into the man holding her. Kia fell to the ground; she jumped to her feet. A tall monster stood several yards away. It's eyes were black and narrow, it's teeth like daggers, and it's finger like claws. The monster from my dream... Zale released it. Remembering what he told her she darted from the spot, the beast followed her. As it ran spines grew on it's back, it began to look more monster like than human. Wait, if it's Zale's monster then he can still hear me. She suddenly stopped swerving around to face the monster. It stopped in it's tracts just as she did. “Zale, I know your in there! Fight it! Regain control!” She yelled. He exists no longer. Kia gasped, It just sent me a message. The beast grabbed her; immense pain bolted through her body. A blood curtling scream ripped through the air. She felt as if she swam in the agonizing pain. She became limp, she had fallen unconscious.
Kia felt something wet on her forehead. Was it all a dream? She awoke seeing Brandon leaning over her putting a wet cloth on her forehead. “Everyone thought you were dead. Your lucky to have survived a death grip like that.” Brandon smirked. She sat up with a groan, “Where's Zale, is he alright?” The wet cloth fell to the ground. Brandon pushed her back down, “You need your rest.” Kia pushed him away noticing the door was closed, “Where's Zale?” she demanded. Brandon soaked another clean cloth but didn't answer her. She crawled over to Mike who was watching them. “Mike, what happened to Zale?” He gave her a sad look, “Castillo said he was too dangerous. So he sentenced him to death. But look on the bright side, at least you'll be set free tonight.” Her heart sunk, tears filled her eyes with grief. Kia crawled back to the mat hiding in her blanket. I can't believe he's gone...
That night Castillo's guards took Kia from the arena. She carried her staff, blanket, and Doyle's stuffed bear. Castillo gave her the reward money and Doyle's horse. She had gotten the raider's symbol tattooed on her hand. So she could leave and come back to the city at anytime. Kia is now in the city traveling down the wide streets...
I've never been in a city. It's so big! Kia looked up at the stars. “Psst!” She turned to see a man peeking out of a tent. “I see you have returned from the arena. I will give you a deal and give you any three items for your horse.” Kia smirked, “What are you selling?” The man pulled her into the tent. Caged animals were on the floor, racks of various cloths against the wall, and weapons of all kinds on a weapons racks. She immediately found the horse useless. “Alright, it'll be a trade.” She informed.
Kia slid her sack off the back of the horse. The man tied the horse's reins to the tent post. “Chose any three items.” the merchant grinned. Kia looked through the cloths. Can't wait to get out of these rags... She found a blue dress with white ribbon around the seems. I've never seen dresses like these before... The merchant kept a close watch on her as if thinking she'd steal something. “First item.” Kia exclaimed holding up the dress. The merchant smiled, “You'll look lovely in that.” She put the dress in her sack.
Kia knelt down to look at the animals. “I've never seen animals like this. What are they?” She asked. The merchant looked down at the animals. “These are Dragon Fox, once they touch a humans skin they are forever loyal to that person. They come in different colors and stay the same size.” He pointed at a group of cages in front of her. He then pointed at the cages in front of him. “These are hippo frogs, once trained they can jump over large trees. They grow to the size of a horse and come in green.” He pointed to the cages in the corner, “And those are Butter Snakes. They're slippery like butter. They are quite friendly creatures. They come in yellow and white. These are all the animals I have.” Kia noticed a cage separated from the rest, “What's that one?” The merchant picked up the cage. “One of the Dragon Fox became sick so I separated him from the others.” Kia peered into the cage, an orange dragon fox wagged it's tail when it saw her. “I'll take this one, and the yellow one.” Kia smiled.
The merchant opened the sick fox's cage. The fox lick her hand as she lifted it out of the cage. She cradled the small animal in her arms. The merchant pulled out a dress from the rack, “I'll throw in a free dress since that Dragon Fox probably will die.” Kia opened her sack, the merchant threw in an ugly mustard yellow dress. Kia waiting patiently for the merchant to retrieve the cage. She held out her hand, while holding Rose in the other. The yellow Dragon Fox crawled into her hand and up her arm to sit on her shoulder. “Thank you,” she smiled at the man. The merchant grinned, “Pleasure doing business with the famous Hole.” She blushed, My arena name... “My name I actually Kia.” The man laughed, “Ok, well have a nice night!” She threw her bag over her shoulder. Her staff hung out of her bag.
Now what should I name you two?” The yellow Dragon Fox curled up on her shoulder. “How about I call you Chip,” She glanced at the yellow Dragon Fox. “And you Rose?” She looked down at the sleepy orange Dragon Fox. Kia's stomach growled, I hope a restaurant is open this late... She walked into a diner; the smell of food made her even hungrier. Men and women watched her as she sat at an empty table in the corner. Chip jumped onto the table chirping happily. Rose snored in Kia's arms. Kia noticed everyone returned to what they were doing when she made eye contact. Are they scared of me? A waitress walked over to her table ignoring other people's orders. “What do you want to eat?” The waitress asked. Kia blushed, “A hot meal and some grapes, please.” The women left her table to tend to the others.
Few minutes later the waitress came back with her food. “How much money do I owe?” Kia asked while digging in her bag for money. “It's on the house.” the waitress informed as she left. Kia closed the sack. She set the grapes on the table, Chip began to pluck off the grapes one by one. Kia picked off a grape, she held it next to Rose's nose. Come on you need to eat... Rose gently bit the grape; Kia set it down for her to eat it. Chip rolled the grapes around the table chasing them. Kia watched him as she ate. The porridge she was eating tasted delicious. Rose crawled over to Chip's grape hoard to eat another.
People started to leave the restaurant till only the people at the bar remained. A thick women was behind the bar serving drinks. Every so often the women would throw out a man from the bar. The women seemed unfriendly and rude. Kia put the extra grapes in her pocket. She threw her sack over her shoulder while Chip snuggled around her neck. Kia carefully picked up Rose cradling her in one arm. She started towards the door; a man entered the diner, he held open the door for her as she left. “Thanks,” She smiled.
Kia walked down the empty streets. Where am I going to stay tonight? At the end of the city street there was a large village. As she walked through the village streets she searched for a place to rest. An open garden surrounded by a short wall looked inviting. Kia hid behind the tall hedges next to the city wall. I'll stay here for the night... She took out her blanket from the sack. Using the sack as a pillow she laid down on the ground. Chip curled up on top of her head while Rose slept under the blanket. Kia closed her eyes, Tomorrow I'll look for a job... Kia drifted into sleep.
Kia awoke to the sound of a violin. She peeked through the hedge. It's the nice guy from last night. He held the door open for me. She stuffed her blanket into the sack. Kia took her staff, however she left her sack behind the hedge. I'll come back later tonight... She carried Rose through the hedge. Where's Chip? Kia snuck out of the hedge stealthily. The violin stopped, “I believe this is yours?” She turned around to find the man with Chip on his shoulder. She laughed, “Yes he is mine.” She took Chip off the man's shoulder one handed. “I'm Carter, you must be Hole?” the man informed. She grimaced, “Yes, but my real name is Kia,” Carter closed his violin case, “I own a shop next to the diner. Maybe you'll come by sometime?” She blushed, “Sure,” Why does he remind me of Doyle? Is it because of his smile? Carter took his case, “It was nice meeting you Kia.” Carter walked away grinning.
Chip sat on her shoulder proudly as they walked through the village. Children of all ages played and laughed in the streets while their parents kept close watch. The children hid from her as she walked down the street. Why are they afraid of me? Chip sprung off her shoulder and onto a ball. He rolled around running on it playfully. Kia heard the children laughing at Chip as he rolled down the street beside her. Kia peeked behind a barrel where two boys were hiding. She smiled at them before giving them the ball. Chip sat on Kia's shoulder sitting proudly once again.
Kia walked back to the diner. They looked short on staff maybe I can work there... She entered the diner, it was packed full of hungry customers. She sat at the bar, This women looks like she's in charge... “Excuse me,” Kia spoke softly. The Thick women turned to her, “What?” Kia swallowed hard, “I'm looking for a job.” The women slid a mug down the table. “Come back tomorrow for work.” the women grumbled. Kia smiled, “Thank you.” Kia left the Diner.
She peeked into the shop Carter owns. The smell of fresh bread filled the air. “Hi Kia!” Carter waved at her from the counter. She looked in the display case. “Need some bread?” Carter asked. Kia pointed at a loaf of french bread, “How much does that cost?” Carter checked a paper in his pocket, “Four coin.” She pointed at it, “Two loaves of that, please.” Carter grinned, “Ok, I'll be right back.” Carter left the counter to go into the back room. Kia looked at the honey on the counter. Carter came back with two loaves of bread in paper. Carter put the loaves in a bag. “I'd like to try one of these.” Kia set a small honey container in the bag. “That will be 17 coin.” Kia set Rose on the counter while she took the money out of her pouch. Wow, that honey is expensive...“Thank you.” Kia placed the coins on the counter and scooped up Rose in her arms. Kia carried the bag out the door. Rose crawled into the bag along with Chip. “Hey, don't eat anything till we get back to the bush!” She exclaimed.
Back at the hedge Kia, Chip, and Rose were eating the bread. Rose seems to be feeling better, she ate more than yesterday. Kia opened the honey, “Now don't waste it the honey cost more than the bread.” She pour tiny globs of honey on Chip and Rose's bread. Kia poured a glob of honey on her bread before closing the container. She bit into the bread, “Mmmm... delicious.” After Chip and Rose devoured their bread they snuggled next to each other for a nap.
Kia leaned against the wall, I wonder how much pay I'll get as a waitress? ... She dug in the sack for the mustard colored dress. Kia held up the dress, I'll use this as my work cloths... She put a loave of bread and money in a small bag.. Kia closed the bag, “All set for work tomorrow!” Rose climbed up her dress to get onto her shoulder. “You must be feeling better.” She patted her on the head. Kia set Rose on the ground. She took off her ragged dress, she slipped the new one over her head. “What do you think?” She asked posing for Rose. Rose climbed up her dress, up onto her shoulder along with Chip. Kia rapped her blanket around herself. “Goodnight Rose, Goodnight Chip.” she yawned flopping onto the sack.
Kia awoke to the sound of the violin. Carter... She grabbed her work bag which Rose and Chip were sleeping in. Kia jumped out of the hedge. Carter waved to her, “You look nice today.” She blushed, her hair was a mess and her dress was wrinkled. Do I take it as a compliment or... “Thanks, bye!” She waved goodbye while running out of the garden. Kia raced down the village streets excited about her new job. As she entered the diner she noticed it was busier than yesterday. “What happened?” she asked the bar tender. The thick women pointed at her, “Get in the back.” The thick women pointed at the door next to the bar. Kia immediately entered through the door. The waitress smiled at her, “Hi, Matilda didn't scare you up too bad did she?” Kia was confused, “Who?” The waitress sighed, “I forgot to introduce myself, I'm Vicky. And Matilda is the bar tender.” Kia smiled, “Nice to meet you I'm Kia.” Vicky smirked, “You'll be washing and drying the dishes.” She pointed to several huge stacks of dishes. “I'll be back later to check on your progress.” Vicky left the back room.
Kia set her bag on a stool. Rose and Chip sat on her shoulders while she worked. She scrubbed a dish with rice stuck to it, How long has these been sitting? Kia rinsed the plate in hot water, then set it on the rack. After every ten or fifteen dishes she'd dry the wet dishes and put them on the counter. Several hours later Vicky returned to find she had finished. “I didn't think you'd finish today.” Kia smiled, “Anything else I can do?” Vicky shook her head, “No, you can go home. Here's your pay.” Vicky dropped twelve coins in her hands. Kia put the coins in her bag. “So, I'll come back tomorrow?” Vicky shook her head, “No, your job is done. All that needed to be done was the dishes.” Kia sighed, “Thanks, bye.” Kia picked up her bag; she left the diner.
Chip and Rose sat proudly on her shoulders. “Hole!” She turned to see Castillo walking down the street towards her. “Enjoying the city?” Kia ran from him, I won't let him catch me... She ran all the way back to the garden. She dove into the hedge hoping Castillo didn't follow. Kia shoved her things into the sack. I'll have to leave the garden... “Kia,” She yelped in surprise. Carter grabbed her, thinking she'd run away. “I saw you running what happened?” He asked worriedly. She pushed away grabbing her sack. “Castillo found me outside of the diner. I have to leave the city.” Carter grabbed her wrist, “Why? Just because you met the arena leader you think he'll take you back?” She froze, “No, I need to stay away from him.” Carter released her hand, “Why? He's a good man.” Kia scoffed at him, “He made me watch my teammates die. And now he put my only friend to death just because he couldn't control him.” Tears filled her eyes. “Just go away!” she pushed past him running through the hedge.
Kia raced to the city gate. She held out her hand showing the guards the mark . The guards opened the door which allowed her to leave. Kia dashed through the forest with tears stinging her eyes. Kia ran till she was exhausted. She curled up underneath a tree sobbing. A thick fog started to form around the area surrounding her. “Who's there?” She looked around, I know that voice... She jumped up, a dim light was coming through the bushes. Kia peeked through the bushes to find a shack with a candle in the window. She cautiously opened the door. Zale was in the corner chained to the wall by twelve chains. “Zale! Your alive!” She exclaimed taking off his blind fold. “Watch out!” he yelled. Kia was knocked out.
Kia jolted awake. “Where am I?” She appeared to be in a jail cell. She stood up looking through the bars, “Hey! Is anyone there?!” The sound of footsteps traveled towards her. Kia stuck her hand out of the bars, “Over here!” She could see a man walking towards the cell. Who is he? The man was holding her sack of valuables. “Your Kia?” She nodded, “Yes, and those are my things your holding.” The man smiled, “I am Terence, Carter's brother-in-law. Now why did you run from the city?” Kia grimaced, “So I can get away from Castillo. I made a promise to my friend to stay away from him.” Terence unlocked the jail cell, “Would you like to see your friend before the execution?” Kia nodded, “Please,”
Terence led her down the dungeon hall. At the end of the hall a stone cell stood. Terence opened the door cautiously. “Who's there?” asked a voice. Kia walked inside cautiously. “I'll stay out here.” Terence informed slamming the door. Kia untied Zale's blind fold. He was chained to the wall by twelve chains, three on each leg and arm. “Kia, are you alright?” He asked. She nodded with tears filling her eyes. Awe great... I'm crying in front of him... “Kia, don't cry,” Zale whispered, “I'm not going down without a fight because I never lose, either I win or I learn.” Kia smirked, “Then maybe you'll visit me in the city?” A slight smile spread across his face, “Perhaps...” Kia stood up, “Goodbye Zale, see you soon.” She pulled open the door to leave.
Once Kia left Zale started devising a plan to escape. Since his blind fold was off he searched the room for a way out. The ceiling, can't see the ceiling... Am I underneath a tower? So I'm underneath a castle tower... But on which side? Zale stood up snapping the chains off the wall. That was too easy... He snapped off the iron cuffs around his arms and legs. Zale pushed on the door, Locked... He looked up seeing a window high up in the wall. Zale crawled up the wall using the loose bricks to his advantage. He sprung off the wall grabbing the window sill. He hoisted himself up onto the tiny ledge. He crawled through the narrow hole. A hand grabbed him by the collar yanking him out of the hole. Their eyes met, Oh crap... The man slammed Zale against the wall. Castillo held a knife to Zale's throat, “I will kill Kia if you contact her.” Castillo informed darkly. Zale didn't speak, I hear footsteps... “Castillo, are you in the garden?” Castillo shoved Zale under a tree before stabbing himself in the side. A man ran over to him, “Castillo! What happened!” Zale hid within the branches of the tree. Castillo groaned, “Zale has escaped, and he stabbed me. Send out guards to search the city! We must protect the people!” Zale grimaced, He framed me...
Guards raced out of the castle searching high and low. Citizens were forced back into their houses. Kia was with Carter inside the bakery. “What's going on? What happened?” she demanded. Carter shrugged, “Probably something big happened after you left the dungeon.” Kia gave Rose and Chip to him, “Can you please watch them till I get back?” Carter gave her a suspicious look, “What are you doing?” Kia fashioned her blanket around her like a cape. She pulled the hood over her head, “I'm going to get some answers.” Kia grabbed her staff. She opened the door stealthily sneaking out of the shop. She hid in a dark alley waiting for a guard to pass by. As a guard passed by she forced him into the alley. Kia used her staff to hold him still. “What's happening why are all these guards outside?” The guard stared up at her frightened, “The prisoner Zale has escaped prison. We're here protecting the people from his wrath.” Kia was about to knock him out however she didn't. “Thank you.” She jumped up running to the bakery. She entered the bakery, Carter stood up. “What did you do?” Kia stuffed her blanket into the sack, “Zale has escaped from prison. Everyone is freaking out thinking he's going to attack the city.” Carter smirked, “So Zale is your friend?” She nodded, “Yup, soon as the guards clear up he should come visit me.”
Day after day the guards did clear up. However Zale never appeared. After a year she lost hope in ever seeing him again. However Carter and her had become close friends over the past year. Kia was renting a room at Carter's bakery. Instead of renting for money she'd look after the shop when Carter needed to run errands. Kia was happy with her new life, however she'd never forget her old life either.
Rose and Chip wrestled underneath the sheets. Kia groaned, “Don't you guys ever sleep in?” She whapped them on the head with a pillow. She peeked out the window to find customers waiting outside to get in. “Oh crap! I was suppose to help Carter!” She dashed out of bed trying to throw her cloths on. She tied on her apron as she raced downstairs. Chip and Rose chased after her. Carter took out several pan of bread from the oven. He smiled at her,“Good, your awake. Take these pans, I have orders to fill.” Kia took the pans, Carter dashed to the cashier counter. Kia began putting the loaves in bags as Carter pasted the paper on the conveyor belt. She rolled a cart behind the counter, “Here are the previous orders.” Carter smirked, “Here's the next orders.” Kia took the mountain of paper to the back. As she filled orders she attached the paper to the bag. It took them almost all day to fill orders. As Carter counted their profit she flipped the open sign to closed. “Well that was busy.” Carter tossed her a couple coins, “Best sale we've had all year. This means people are coming in to see the Snow Parade.” Kia smiled, “I can't wait to see it!” Hopefully I won't get sick this time...
A postage man knocked on the door. Kia opened it, “Yes?” The man handed her three decorative letters. The royal initial was stamped on it. “Thank you,” she said taking the letters. Carter put the money in the safe. “What's that?” She shrugged, “I don't know there's one for us, Chip and Rose.” Kia gave him his letter. She broke the seal opening the letter; I've been invited to a royal snowball I can invite a guest... “What's a royal snowball?” Carter smirked, “It's a ball the King throws every year a day before the parade. Open Chip's letter.” She opened the letter, she started to laugh as she read it. “It says your invited to the Royal Snowball don't break anything.” Carter laughed, “Guess the King has some humor.” Kia tossed the letters on the counter, “Will we meet the King?” Carter nodded, “Yes, it's his ball. So what are you going to wear?” Kia smiled sheepishly, “I don't know, I don't have anything fancy.” Carter grinned, “Alright, then just wear what you usually wear.” She blushed, “I'm just going to go shopping.” Kia raced upstairs to grab her coin purse.Wonder what dresses I'll find in the market...
Kia grabbed her coin purse racing downstairs. Carter was wiping the counter. “I can watch Rose and Chip while you shop.” he informed. She smirked, “Thanks, but I like having them with me.” Chip climbed up her dress onto her shoulder. Rose preferred Kia picking her up. Kia carried Rose out of the shop; Chip sat proudly on her shoulder. She walked down the road to find the market place buzzing with people. Kia stopped at a highly decorated shop. Once she entered the smell of flowers filled the air. She noticed it wasn't as busy as the other shops. Kia looked around at the clothing, most of the dresses were too fancy. “Can I help you?” Kia turned to see a women wearing glasses. “I'm looking for something to wear to the Snow Ball.” Kia informed. The women smiled suspiciously, “Follow me.” Kia followed the women to the back of the shop. Blue and white dresses littered the room. “Here's the winter selection.” Kia noticed the dresses were very expensive. “I can't afford any of these, sorry.” The women smiled, “Fine, choose a dress and we can work out a deal.” Kia looked through the endless room of dresses for hours.
This is taking too long to decide... The door rang as a customer entered. Kia peeked out of the room. Carter gave money to the women, he was holding a decorated box. What's he doing in a dress shop? Is he going to wear a dress? The woman smiled at him, “Your date will look lovely in that dress.” Carter smiled, before leaving. So he has a date huh? Guess I need to bring a guest too... Kia left the room, the women walked towards her. “Find anything you like?” Kia shook her head, “No, but thanks anyway.” The women smiled as Kia left the shop. Rose and Chip slept around her neck as she walked back to the bakery.
Kia entered the bakery, she raced upstairs to her room. She placed Chip and Rose inside a basket on the nightstand. Kia rummaged through her dresses, she threw three long blue dresses on the bed. Now which one will I wear? Carter knocked on the door softly. “Come in,” she smiled. Carter entered seeing her looking at her normal clothing. “Didn't find anything you liked?” She sighed, “Nope, everything was ugly.” Carter laughed, “Hopefully this isn't.” Carter tossed a decorative box on the bed. She opened the box, she lifted the dress up holding it up. (see picture 2) Kia gave him a huge hug, “I love it.” Carter squeezed her gently. “I'm glad you like it.” Kia smiled sheepishly, “Thank you,”
Kia dashed back to the bed; she put the dress on a manikin. “Aren't you going to try it on?” Carter asked. Kia blushed, “So when is the Snow Ball again?” “The day after tomorrow.” Carter said with a smile. Kia started jumping up and down, “I'm so excited!” Carter shrugged, “I have a couple errands to run. See you later.” Kia waved goodbye as he left the room. Chip and Rose began jumping on her clean dresses. “Hey stop it!” she yelled. She snatched the dresses out from under them; they clung onto her. She threw the dresses in the closet. She began prying them off her dress. “Come on don't rip it!” Chip sprung off her along with Rose. Kia plopped onto her bed with a groan.
Chip snuggled next to her face. She jumped up holding Chip away from her nose, “Man you reek!” She grabbed Rose as she walked to the bathroom. Kia closed the door behind her, When is the last time I gave them a bath? She turned the bathtub's faucet. Water poured from the spout, Chip jumped around panicking. “Chip! It's alright!” Kia grabbed her squirmy pet from the shower curtain. She set him in the warm water hoping he'd calm down. The sound of the water scared him... Rose swam around the tub happily. Chip began swimming after her. Kia laughed as she watched them play. She scrubbed Rose with soap; Rose enjoyed the attention so much she started chirping. Once Kia was finished she rinsed her off in the sink. Rose is getting fat, I need to put her on a diet... Chip jumped out of the tub running around the room soaked. “Chip!” Kia screamed scooping him up. Rose snuggled in a dry towel while Kia washed Chip. Chip squirmed as she rinsed him off. Once she put him on the towel he jumped back into the soapy tub. Kia yanked him out of the water, she pulled the plug waiting for the water to drain. She rinsed Chip again, when she finished she set him on the towel next to Rose. “Alright, your free to go.” Kia opened the bathroom door. Chip dashed out of the room running up and down. Rose jumped into the basket on the nightstand to sleep. Kia took off her shoes sleepily, “Goodnight everyone.” She crawled under her blanket snuggling with Chip under the covers.
Good she's safe... Zale watched Kia from her open window. Shadows moved across her room, Apparently others know she is here too... Zale pulled a veil over his lower face. An assassin stealthily snuck to Kia's bedside. Zale flew through the window kicking the assassin in the face. “Get out.” Zale hissed quietly. The assassin dashed between his legs stabbing him in the back. He swerved kicking the assassin out the window. Kia awoke, “Chip, what did you get into now?” A blur raced past her head and out the window. She jumped up panicking, Did Chip jump out the window?! She looked frantically out the window, “Chip!” Chip crawled onto her shoulder sleepily. She sighed with relief, “If it wasn't you, what was that?” Kia closed her window, she crawled underneath her covers to resume sleeping. It was probably just the wind...
Zale sat on the bakery's rooftop mending his wounds. He formed an orb, Need to heal this before I bleed to death... Zale began playing the orb. “Who's there?” said a voice. He abruptly stopped, he peeked over the edge to see Kia looking out the window. Kia formed an orb, she began playing. Zale slightly smiled, You still remember... After she played through the song once he joined in. The music combined sounded like an professional orchestra playing an zealous song. Kia abruptly stopped when she looked up. “Who are you?” Zale jumped away from the edge. Crap, she saw me... “Wait! Don't go! I like playing the orb with you. Usually I play it alone.” Zale began playing again however he remained out of her sight. Kia joined the song smiling the entire time.
Kia, wake up.” She looked at Carter sleepily and yawned. He smiled at her, “Were you up all night?” Kia held up the orb she was holding, “I was playing a song with someone on the roof.” Carter stared at her hand confused. Kia smiled sheepishly, I forgot, only some people can see the orb... Kia grinned, “I'm kidding, Chip kept me up.” Carter smiled, “I came up here to tell you that your off today.” Kia jumped up, “Ok, thanks!” Carter left the room. Kia stood up stretching her arms and legs. A white paper lay on her nightstand. “What's this?” She opened the note, it read: It takes one song to bring back one-thousand memories. Kia smiled, The person on the roof must've left this... I wish I could meet him... She put the note in a drawer. Kia changed cloths before slipping on her shoes. Chip and Rose snuggled inside their basket. “You two want to come with me?” Chip and Rose ignored her when she opened the door. Kia placed a bowl of grapes on the floor, “I'll be back soon then.” Kia walked downstairs.
Kia left the bakery with a few coins in her pocket. As she walked down the street she noticed a shadow following her. I must be seeing things... Once she entered the village, the village children swarmed around her. The past year they had grown fond of her and became her friends. “Kia! Kia! Can you play today?” asked one girl. She nodded, “Yes, but I have a mission for you all.” The children became excited. “A mission! What kind of mission?” one boy yelled. “Shhhh!” she shooshed. She motioned them to come closer, “A man is following me, do you think everyone can catch him?” The children giggled excitedly. One of the older boys stepped in front, “Me and the older kids will corner him. Everyone else tie him up.” The children scattered to look for rope. Kia began walking through the village casually.
She watched the children swarm behind a house. A little girl ran to her, “We got him!” She pointed at the older kids dragging him into the street. Once the man saw Kia he broke the ropes. Before he could run the children dog piled on top of him. Kia laughed as she walked over to them. “Carter, why are you following me?” He gave her a sheepishly grin, “I was protecting you from him!” Kia swerved around, an assassin stood a yard away from her. “Children run!” she yelled. The kids sprung off of Carter running back to their homes. Carter jumped in front of her, “I'll protect you.” Kia blushed, Does he even know how to fight?
The assassin dodged Carter's attacks, he knocked Carter out with a kick. The assassin grabbed Kia's arm trying to force her to the ground. She flipped the assassin onto his back and used her body to slam him into the ground. The assassin rolled out of the way to grabbed her. He flipped her onto her back holding her down with his body. The assassin held the knife to her throat ready to kill her. The assassin was yanked off of her brutally. The man wore a dark veil hiding his face. The man from last night... The assassin stabbed the man in the stomach however that didn't slow him down. The man punched the assassin across the clearing. The assassin fell to the ground unconscious.
Kia jumped up, “Thank you, for saving me.” The man ignored her walking away slightly limping. Kia chased after him, “Will you at least tell me your name?” The man tossed a paper over his shoulder before walking in-between houses. She ran after him, she stopped, “Where'd he go?” It's like he disappeared in thin air... Kia picked up the paper, one word was written. Micheal Kia smiled, So his name is Micheal... He seems familiar... Carter sat up groaning, “What hap-” He jumped up, “Kia! Are you alright?” She shoved the paper in her pocket, “I'm fine, how's your head?” He winced when she poked his arm, “I'll be fine, lets get back to the bakery.” Kia followed Carter back to the bakery. Kia looked at the place where the assassin fainted. He's gone...
Carter seemed worried, “Kia, remember this morning when you told me you were playing a song with a man on the roof?” She nodded sheepishly, I was half asleep...I shouldn't have said that... “What about it?” Carter shrugged, “Do you know who he is?” Kia shook her head, “No-” “Aha! So you were lying. Kia why are you keeping secrets from me?” Carter stopped to face her. She shrugged, “I'm not keeping anything from you.The guy started playing his orb so I joined in. He's very shy and he doesn't speak. That's all I know.” Carter frowned, “That guy must've been the assassin who was following you.” Kia scoffed at him, “No, after you passed out he rescued me from the assassin.” Carter smiled sheepishly, “Oh, never mind then.”
Kia took out a coin from her pocket, “I need to stop by the diner.” Carter followed her, “I'm not letting you out of my sight.” Kia blushed, “I doubt the assassin will come back today.” They entered the diner, Matilda motioned them to come over to her. “The usual please.” Kia informed. Matilda gave Vicky the order. Matilda leaned over the counter, “Kia, your one lucky girl to have survived that attack.” Kia smiled sheepishly, “Word spread around already?” Matilda nodded, “Your lucky to have a ninja as a bodyguard.” she pointed to a table in a dark corner of the room. Kia peeked over her shoulder to see Micheal sitting at that table. “He's not my ninja, but he did rescue me.” Kia informed. Matilda grabbed a bag from Vicky, “That'll be four coin.” Kia dropped for coins into her hand while taking the bag. “Thanks, see you later!” Kia smiled. “You be careful!” Matilda yelled back. Kia looked over at the table where Micheal was sitting. He's gone... Kia and Carter left the diner.
Carter opened the door for Kia. She entered the bakery, “Thanks.” Carter locked the door behind them. “If an assassin gets in your room, scream.” Carter said worriedly. Kia darted upstairs ignoring him. She burst into her room, “Chip, Rose, I'm home!” Kia put the food on the desk. She took off her shoes and peeked into Rose and Chip's basket. Chip was fast asleep snuggled next to Rose who was wide awake. Kia opened the window sticking her head out. “Micheal! Are you up there?” She heard no answer. I forgot, he doesn't speak... Kia heard tiny coughs coming from the basket. She peeked inside, Rose was coughing. Is she sick? She picked Rose up gently, She has a fever... probably just a cold... She lay chip back inside the basket. Chip curled around her. Kia put a blanket over the basket's handle to form a dome over it. She set Chip on her pillow, “I don't want you to catch the cold.” Kia shaped a blanket into a circular nest. “You can sleep here.” Chip climbed into the nest staring at Rose's basket. Kia put a few grapes into the basket hoping she'll eat.
Kia changed into her night gown. She plopped onto the bed, Two more days till the Snow Ball... Kia watched the sunset. She peeked out the window and up at the roof. I wonder if he's up there... Kia stood on the window sill. She climbed up onto the roof using the missing bricks as foot holds. The stone roof was mostly flat except for a tiny peak in the middle. He's not here... Kia lost her foot as she climbed down. A hand grabbed her before she fell. Micheal... He swung her back through her window.
She rolled off her bed. She came face to face with an assassin under her bed. She screamed at the top of her lungs. Kia rolled out of the way as the assassin came out. She grabbed her staff from the corner, “Why are you trying to kill me?” she demanded. The assassin seemed confused with her words. Michael flew through the window tackling the assassin to the floor. The assassin stabbed Michael in the stomach again. However it didn't affect him, Michael threw the assassin out the window. Micheal stood up, he held his stomach. Kia grabbed a first aid kit from the desk. “Your hurt!” Kia yelled. Micheal moved away from her. Kia grabbed Michael's arm, “I'm trying to help.” Micheal pulled his arm away gently. “Let me help you, I don't know how else to repay you.” Carter burst into the room with a baseball bat. “Kia, what's wrong?” Michael jumped out the window. Kia shrugged, “The other guy already beat him up.” Carter frowned, “Darn it!” Carter left the room. She crawled under her covers to sleep.
Zale shoved the assassin to the wall holding a knife to his throat. “Who are you working for? Come on, I searched all night for an answer.” he hissed. The assassin started to cough, “Carter, now please let me go!”Kia's friend... Zale knocked the assassin out. He ran to the bakery stealthily. He entered through Carter's bedroom window. “Wake up.” Zale hissed. Carter jumped out of bed frightened. Zale grabbed him by the collar shoving him against the wall. Carter shrieked liked a little girl. Zale smirked underneath the veil, This guy is a wimp, he just wet his pants...“Call off your assassins. Why are you trying to kill Kia?” Zale hissed. “What are you talking about? I don't have the money for assassins. Besides I love Kia I wouldn't do anything to hurt her!” Carter yelled. Zale stared him straight in the eye, He's lying... “Sorry for my intrusion.” Zale left through the window. Need to warn Kia...
Kia jolted awake hearing a girly scream from downstairs. She raced down the steps, “Carter are you alright?!” She found him putting on a t-shirt. He looked at her confused, “I'm fine,” Kia smiled sheepishly, “I heard someone scream.” Carter pointed out the window, “The neighbor's kids are outside playing.” She peeked out the window seeing boys and girls kicking around a ball. “You need to get ready for the ball. The coach will be here in an hour.” Kia raced upstairs, I almost forgot about the ball! She slipped on the dress and started brushing her hair. Stupid mattes, I hate brushing my hair... Kia sat down at the desk. She after untangling her hair she was relieved that she could brush through easily. Kia parted it in the middle, she set the brush down once she was through. She walked over to the mirror looking at herself. I've never worn such a fancy dress...
Kia sat on the bed to put on her shoes. A blue rose along with a note lay on her pillow. She smiled, Micheal must've left this... She opened the note:Be careful at the ball. I believe Carter is planning something. Someone knocked on the door, “Come in,” She shoved the note in the drawer. Carter walked inside speechless. Kia blushed, “You came up here for something?” Carter grinned, “You look beautiful, but it's missing something...” Carter took the rose from her pillow. “This is perfect.” Carter broke some of the stem off and put it in her hair. “It matches your dress perfectly.” Kia blushed while slipping on her shoes, “Thank you.” Carter took her by the hand, “The carriage will arrive soon. Shall we?” She smiled sheepishly, “Chip, Rose, are you coming?” Rose and Chip peeked their heads out of the basket. Kia opened the door signaling them to come if they wanted to. Rose and Chip fell back into the basket to sleep.
Carter and Kia walked downstairs, the carriage waited for them by the front door. Carter helped her into the carriage before climbing inside. Kia smiled, “We could've walked, the castle isn't that far.” Carter shrugged, “The carriage was my father's idea.” Kia waved to the village children as they rode through the village. The carriage came to a stop at the front of the castle. Carter exited first, he helped her out of the carriage. Kia looked up at the huge castle in awe. “I've never been this close to the castle before.” she informed. Carter led her into the ball room. She noticed not many people were there yet. “Are we early?” she asked sheepishly. Carter smirked, “Yes, people are just arriving.” Musicians started to play a slow song. Some of the people started dancing with their dates. Is Carter going to ask me to dance? What do I do I don't know how to dance!
Terence walked up to them with his date, “Nice to see you both again. Kia you look lovely, enjoying the party?” She nodded, “Yes, I've never been to a fancy party like this.” Terence gave her a suspicious smile, “So what was your life before the arena?” Kia smiled sheepishly, I want to hide... Carter stepped up, “How is your training to become a knight?” Thank you Carter... Terence smirked, “My training has gone rather well. I'll be taking the final test tomorrow morning.” Terence looked past Carter's shoulder, “If you'll excuse me, I have more guests to greet.” Terence and his date walked by them. Carter led Kia to the other side of the room. “Don't panic but Castillo just got here.” he whispered. She blushed, “Thank you for changing the subject.” Carter grinned, “No problem.” Kia looked at the hundreds of people dancing. Wow, theres so many people!
Carter took her by the hand, “Would you like to dance?” She blushed, “I don't know how.” “I'll teach you.” He pulled her out to the middle. He held her hand in one hand and her waist in the other. “Now put your hand on my shoulder.” he directed. She sheepishly placed her hand on his shoulder. “Step right, then left, and slowly spin around with me.” Kia sheepishly did as he said. Carter smiled, “Are you sure you haven't done this before? Your a natural.” She blushed, “Thanks, but no I've never done this before.” Kia stepped on his foot, he winced, “Ow,” She blushed sheepishly, “I'm sorry.” He laughed, “It's fine I barely felt it.” Carter and Kia danced till sunset at that time Carter led her into the castle garden.
Carter, are we allowed in here?” Kia asked worriedly. Kia caught a glance of Micheal hiding in the trees. Carter led her under a decorated gazebo. They both sat down on a bench. Kia's stomach growled, “Sorry, I'm kinda hungry.” Carter smiled, “We'll eat before we leave.” Kia noticed he hesitated, What is he nervous about? “Kia, I have something to ask you.” Carter informed. He stood up and knelt down in front of her. He took a box out of his pocket, “Will you marry me?” He held the box open, a small ring was inside. Kia blushed was speechless, Michael's note...I believe Carter is planning something...Micheal knew about Carter proposing to me... Carter stood up holding the ring, waiting for an answer. Kia jumped up giving him a hug, “Yes, I'll marry you!” Carter spun her around with a huge grin. He set her down and put the ring on her finger. Kia caught a glance of Michael watching her from a tree. Why is he so nosey? Carter led Kia back to the ball room, “I'd like you to meet my family before we leave.”
A line of people waited for them including the King and Queen. Carter smiled, “Kia, this is my family.” Kia smiled sheepishly, “Hi,” Kia sheepishly curtsied. He's related to the King? Is he a Prince? Carter began to introduce his family, “Well you've already met Terence. This is my sister Daniella. And my parents King Geoffrey and Queen Eleanora.” Carter informed. Kia smiled sheepishly, “Nice to meet you all.” King Geoffrey smiled, “Carter has told me much about you. You'll make a fine daughter-in-law.” Kia blushed, “Thank you.” Carter slightly bowed, “If you'd excuse us we haven't eaten yet.” Carter led Kia to the food tables. Everything smell delicious... Kia neatly put food on her plate. Carter walked behind her as she filled her plate. “Kia, let's go wait for the carriage.” He informed. Kia stuffed a biscuit in her mouth as Carter led her to the front.
They waited on the front steps for the carriage to arrive. Kia swallowed, “Why didn't you tell me you were a Prince?” Carter paced back and forth, “I wanted you to marry me because you loved me. I didn't want you to marry me for the money.” Kia grinned, “That's very smart, lets do that with our kids.” Carter laughed, “I don't want to think about that right now.” Kia grimaced, “Why not talk about it? We're getting married, don't you want kids?” The carriage came to a stop. Carter nodded, “I do but, I just don't see the need to bring up something like that till we're married.” Kia shoved Carter in the carriage first, not allowing him to help her. She sat across from him inside the carriage. “Then I don't see need for you to help me into the carriage.” she hissed. They both were quiet the entire ride home. Kia stomped upstairs. “Goodnight!” Carter yelled upstairs. Kia waved, “Goodnight!” Kia entered her room quietly closing her door. Carter entered his room frustrated, I can't wait to get rid of that brat!
Kia threw off her dress to get into her night gown. Rose and Chip chirped at her from the basket. Kia opened her bag of food from the diner. “Oh crap I forgot about this.” Kia tossed it into the trash bin. She heard a soft tapping noise. Kia looked at the window to see Micheal sitting barely on her window sill. She opened the window allowing him inside. He sat on the floor staring up at her. Kia crossed her arms, “What do you want? Oh, and thanks for the heads up about Carter's proposal.” Michael stared at her blankly, “Your still the same idiot.” he informed sharply. Her mouth dropped, “So you can talk! Wait, why am I an idiot?” Michael took the notes out of the drawer, “Your an idiot because your marrying Carter. Can't you see he's playing you?” Kia scoffed at him, “Your just jealous I'm not marrying you!” Michael crossed his arms, “I'm just trying to protect you.” Kia stuck his tongue out at him. “I don't need your protection.” She informed. Micheal stood up, “The next time an assassin shows up I won't be there.” He left through the window.
Kia slammed the window shut. I'll show him who the idiot really is... Kia took a deep breath before sliding under her covers. Why are Rose and Chip tired all the time? I should take them to the vet tomorrow... Kia yawned, Better not say vet out loud... Kia fell asleep.
Carter shook Kia awake, “Hey, wake up sleeping beauty.” Kia sat up, “What?” Carter kissed her cheek. “Good morning.” He announced. Kia yawned, “Good morning to you to.” Carter placed a skinny round box on her lap. “I've been meaning to give this to you.” Kia opened the box carefully to find a braided circlet. (See picture 3) Kia carefully took it out of the box. “Thank you, it's lovely.” Kia smiled. Carter grinned, “I'd like you to wear it during the parade.” Carter placed it on top of her head. “Beautiful!” Kia blushed, I feel sick... Carter jumped up peeking into Rose and Chip's basket. “Kia, do you feel alright? You look pale.” He asked worriedly. She fell back onto her pillow, “I'm fine I just sat up too fast.” He won't let me go to the parade if he finds out I'm sick... Carter grinned, “Alright, meet me downstairs. I have some papers we need to sign.” Carter left the room. Kia groaned, How will I last till tonight?
Kia slowly put on her dress. Chip drug her shoes to her feet. She stepped into her shoes. “Chip, stay here with Rose.” she demanded. She took her staff, she walked downstairs clumsily, I hope I don't puke... Carter caught her before she fell down the stairs. “Kia, are you sure your feeling well?” He asked worriedly. He led her to a chair. She nodded, “Yes, I'm fine.” She sat down at the dining table. Two papers were laid out in front of her. Carter had already written his signature. “Once you sign these papers our marriage will be official.” Carter informed cheerfully. Kia began reading the papers, Blah blah blah marriage blah, blah... Kia signed her name next to Carter's. Carter took the papers and put them in an envelope. “I'll mail these to my father.” Carter informed, putting it into his coat pocket.
Kia stood up using her staff to hold her up. “When does the parade start?” she asked walking towards the door. Carter stopped her, “Kia, your acting like your sick. I don't think you should go this year.” Kia opened the door, “I'm going whether I'm sick or not. I've waited all year to see it.” Carter grabbed her arm, “I insist you stay, your going to hurt yourself.” Carter demanded. Kia pulled her arm away gently, “Please, I have a feeling that I need to go.” Carter pulled her back into the bakery, locking the door behind them. “I won't allow you to leave this house.” he hissed. Kia grabbed the papers out of his coat. She ripped them to pieces, I should've listened to Michael he was right... Kia raced upstairs to her room. “Kia! Wait!” Carter yelled up the steps.
She slammed the door behind her, What did I ever see in him? She threw off her circlet. She tied on her cloak and climbed out the window. Rose and Chip were on her shoulders chirping. Need to get to the parade...Kia burst into the diner running to Matilda, “Please take care of Rose and Chip. I'll come back for them later.” Kia ran out of the diner. She saw Carter peek out of the bakery. She pulled the hood over her head hoping he wouldn't recognize her. Kia snuck past him stealthily, Well that worked... She ran to the village, Hope I'm not too late... She fought her way through the large crowd. I won't be able to see anything... “Kia!” She looked up to see Michael standing on a roof. “You'll see better from up here.” he informed. Kia climbed the wall, Michael hoisted her onto the roof. Kia breathed heavily, “Thanks, that crowd is rough.”
Michael pointed at street performers walking down the road. “You barely made it. What happened to Carter?” Kia shrugged, “He was concerned about my health. I should probably apologize to him after the parade. He was looking out for me.” Kia sat down next to Michael. They watched the many parade floats, dancers, and fire spiters, come and go. “Here come the second to last float.” Michael announced, pointing at a highly decorated float. A statue of two people, one with a bow, the other with a sword. Ribbons, jewels and flower petals littered the float. “Who are the people in the statue?” Kia asked curiously. “That is Vira and Nathaniel Zake. They gave up everything to save this land. The statue is a reminder of how we can lose everything in an instant. Hey, there they are!” Micheal pointed at the last float. A women and a man waved at the crowd, Kia looked in awe. My parents...I thought they were dead... The women held a sword while the man held a bow. “Michael, I need to meet them.” Kia informed, tears filled her eyes. “They're my parents...I thought they were dead.” she choked. She whipped away her tears.
Kia! How'd you get up there?” She looked down to see Carter. She turned to say goodbye to Micheal however he was gone. “Catch me!” Kia yelled as she slid down the roof into Carter's arms. “Carter, I'm sorry I ran off I know you were trying to protect me but I really do feel fine.” She informed before he exploded with anger. Carter sighed, “Alright, I forgive you. But don't run off like that! You scared me half to death.” The noisy crowd became silent as the float disappeared into the castle. Carter set Kia on the ground, “You dropped this.” He placed the circlet on her head. Kia started walking towards the castle, “Carter, I need to see Vira and Nathaniel Zake!” Carter grabbed her arm trying to stop her, “No, we need to go home your not well.” Kia yanked her arm from his grasp. A sharp needle pierced her skin. What? What happened? Why am I so sleepy... Kia fell to the ground unconscious.
Zale watched from afar as an assassin picked up Kia. Carter had an suspicious smirk on his face. “Take her to the castle.” The assassin bowed before leaving in the shadows. Zale jumped down from the roof. “Carter, what are your plans for her?” Zale demanded. A devilish smiled appear on Carter's face, “Come to the castle roof tonight if you really want to know.” Carter started walking away from him. Zale grabbed Carter's arm, twisting it behind his back. “If you hurt her I will kill you.” Zale hissed. He threw Carter to the ground the onlookers gasped at the scene. Carter stood up, “I wasn't planning on hurting her. More like relieving her of her evil essence.” Carter turn to face him. “Don't interfere or the process could kill her.” Zale grabbed Carter by the ear while walking past him. “Let go of me!” Carter hissed.
Zale took him to a dark alley. He released his ear, “What do you mean by evil essence?” Zale demanded. Carter leaned against the wall not caring that Zale was keeping him hostage. “You've heard of Zale from the arena? He had a monster of uncontrollable power. Every family member in the Zake family has one. I'm going to relieve her of the beast. So I can send it back where it came from.” Carter informed. Kia doesn't have it anymore, the process could kill her. “She doesn't have what your looking for.” Zale informed. Zale took off one of his gloves to place his hand on Carter's neck. Carter fell to the ground, Zale released his neck. “Now you see who your really after.” Zale walked away from Carter. “I will hunt you down.” Carter coughed. Zale shrugged, “Just be on the castle roof tonight as you planned.” Zale disappeared in a shadow.
Kia awoke in a fancy bedroom. Where am I? She jumped off the bed opening the window. The full moon was glowing in the wavy sky. I'm in the castle? She looked around the room for a way out. However there wasn't even a door. This is like that dream I had... A loud creek startled her. She swerved around ready for an attack. The side of the wall was open, it revealed secret stairs. Kia cautiously walked up the steps. Where does this lead? She came to a stop, an old wooden door blocked her path. As she pushed on the door she could hear men speaking. However she couldn't understand them.
The door flung open revealing a battle. This is exactly like my dream... Carter and Michael were fighting hand to hand combat. Kia pulled them apart, she stood in-between them. “Stop it!” she yelled. Carter and Michael stopped in their tracts. “Kia, get out of here! That man kidnapped you!” Carter yelled. Kia remained where she stood. “Carter is lying, his assassin brought you here.” Michael informed calmly. Carter dashed around Kia to tackled Michael to the ground. Michael threw him off however Carter had ripped off his veil. Kia gasped, “Zale...” Carter smiled devilishly, “Kia, now who's story do you believe?” Kia fell to her knees still in shock. Zale stared at her, “Castillo threatened to kill you if I contacted you. Please believe me, Carter doesn't care about you all he wants is power.” Zale informed calmly. Kia slowly stood up with her fist clenched. “How can I trust you when I barely know you!” Kia exclaimed, running towards him. Zale dodged her attempts at hitting him. She slapped him which caught him off guard. Zale stumbled back dazed from the hit. Kia knocked Zale to the ground, taking advantage of the situation she knocked him out.
Carter put a bracelet onto Zale's wrist. “That should hold him.” Carter announced. Tears filled Kia's eyes, I shouldn't have done that, what if he was right? Carter gave her a hug, “You did the right thing.” he cheered. Kia started to sob, “I'm ready to go home.” An evil laugh ripped from Carter's throat, “Do you really think I care?” Carter pushed her away roughly. Kia fell backwards onto her rump. “So Zale was right!” Kia exclaimed. I should have listened to him... Carter was strangely silent, he was staring at something large behind her. Kia slowly stood up. She peeked over her shoulder, the same beast at the arena stood behind her.
Carter ran away screaming, the beast followed immediately. The beast changed direction, it was racing towards Zale's unconscious form. It's going to kill him... Kia jumped in front of Zale with her arms wide, “Stop!” The beast came to a stop staring at her. I can't believe that worked... The monster whapped her, flinging her across the roof. Kia held her stomach in pain, Need to close up this wound... She watched the beast raise it's claws ready to kill Zale. Kia formed an orb in her hands. She began playing the song Zale taught her long ago. An ear piercing shriek filled the air as the beast crumbled to dust. Kia's orb disintegrated in her hands. I didn't close up the wound... She lay on the ground waiting to die. Kia waited several long minutes knowing her fate.
She heard Zale gasp when he awoke. Zale raced over to her with orb in hand. She placed a hand on it, preventing him from playing. “No, too late for that.” Zale dropped the orb. He carefully picked her up, “Hold on.” Kia put her arms around his neck. A rush of wind blew past them. Zale had jumped off the castle roof. He landed on his feet, causing a small crater. Zale darted from the spot running through the castle wall. Kia closed her eyes, I feel so dizzy... Zale rushed into a cave, he stopped at an underground spring. It was lit by glowing flowers growing out of the rock. He gently set her in the spring, “Kia, I'll be waiting for you.” Zale informed. Kia gasped, “Your right I am a idiot.” Zale smirked, “Save your energy.” Kia slowly drifted into sleep, the water around her crawled up her skin. It encased her in a bubble slowly diving deep underwater.
A blond Mermaid popped it's head up, “What do you have to pay for her healing?” The mermaid asked. Zale formed an orb, he held it out giving it to her. The mermaid inspected the orb curiously, “This'll do. Wait in the hammock.” The mermaid swam down into the spring. Zale walked to a tattered hammock. He laid in it waiting for the mermaid to return. He ate petals off the glowing flowers. Kia, please don't die... Zale formed another orb, he began playing a slow tune. The mermaid shot out of the water onto the slippery rocks. “I'm sorry but your friend is dead.” Zale popped the orb in shock. The mermaid started laughing hysterically, “I'm kidding she's fine. Sorry but I couldn't help it! You should've seen your face!” Zale sprung out of the hammock. She flopped back into the spring startled. Coward...
Zale waited for hours. Zale hung from the ceiling like a bat. So bored... His grip slipped, he fell to the ground. “Ow...” Zale sat up, he began scratching symbols into the rock. He noticed there were drag marks going into the spring. None of the marks are going out of the spring... The mermaid popped it's head up, “Your friend is healing remarkably fast.” she grabbed Zale's arms dragging him into the spring. “But you won't live to see her.” Zale allowed the mermaid to drag him under. She pulled him to the bottom of the spring. Zale crossed his arms, “I figured out how you can breath air. You eat the flower petals.” The mermaid hissed at him, “I was hoping to drown you.” Zale smirked, “Apparently if the petals are eaten by humans they can breath water.” The mermaid circled him, “Your the first to escape a watery grave. Follow me.” Zale swam after her, he followed the mermaid back to the surface. “For succeeding here's your prize.” The mermaid gave him a vile of red liquid. “It is my blood, sprinkle it on your skin and you'll become immortal.” Zale climbed out of the spring. Well it stinks that I can't use it... He found Kia rapped in a blanket on the ground. The mermaid smiled, “Your friend has been healed.” She sunk into the spring.
Zale held Kia in his arms. He splattered the blood onto her skin. Too bad I can't use this... Kia awoke grimacing, “What are you doing?” Zale slightly smiled, “Don't speak, save your energy.” He carried her out of the cave. Kia stared up at him as he walked back to the city. Zale entered through the hole they left through. He carefully placed Kia on the Zake's doorstep. Zale stood up to leave. Kia reached out, “Where are you going?” Zale glanced at her, “Show your parents the orb when you get inside.” Zale left in a shadow. Few weeks later Carter was found dead in an alley. Kia knew it was Zale's doing. However she didn't want to get him into more trouble.
Kia lived with her parents for several years till she was married. As the years flew by Kia's friends and family died while she lived on. She was sad about their deaths, however she wasn't alone. She'd sometimes catch a glimpse of Zale hiding in the shadows. Always watching and protecting her. Kia started to travel around the world, which made life more exciting. As the years past she learned to adapt to her new found immortality . The end

  1. Not bad. Could use some font spaces between the speaking of the characters. Also, What if you made the ending a little more touching, like havining Kila play an instrument in the night, followed by another following the tune as it fades away? But all in all; not bad!
